Intermediate shaft on 2.3l 92 ranger

I've got a 92 ranger with a 2.3l motor. Problem is that the oil pump went or the intermediate shaft went. Question is if the shaft broke will the motor still start? Does the intermediate shaft control the distributor? Mine runs but makes an awful noise.

It will run only long enough to seize up. You'll need to pull the oil pan to change the pump. You will have to lift the engine to get enough room to take the pan off. By the time you've disconnected exhaust & etc etc to get the hieght, you might as well pull the engine right out of the truck. At least then, it will be easier to change the pump & shaft.
