OK.. sorry that I have posted so many questions on this.. here's my (not promised.. but maybe?) last question on tires..
I currently have (puny) 235-60R16's.. Stock on the '00 F150 4x2 is 235-70R16..
now if I calculate correctly, stock would be 28.95 inches. There is a gentleman that has 285/50/R20 tires / wheels for sale. I calculate that these would be 31.22 inches.. from the post on the 1st page, it looks like I would need to add a lift kit. Is this the case?

Not sure about your question wayne, but...
I am posting b/c I finally got my new tires on my '98 4x4. I had nearly bald stock size tires (don't even know what that is, b/c I don't care). After going through this thread again I decided to be safe and go with the size everyone knows will fit, a 285/75/16. I went with BFG All Terrain's, total cost was $773 after mounting, balancing, road hazard, etc. It is amazing how much better it looks now. Maybe after these I will try some a little bigger now that I can see how much room I have to spare down there with the 285's. We'll have to see next time.

Maybe you could talk to the place that sold you them and tell them you could could have paid $100 less for the same thing?? Maybe they'll give you the difference back?

Sams club Orlando, FL. All 4 tires with mounting, balancing, valve stems, tire fees, roadside hazzard, flat service, blah blah blah. Total was $746.xx actually, not $780, sorry.

I don't know...I have the 3 1/2 inch leveling kit (2inch blocks rear)
fabtech says I can run 295/75/r16's but the 285's look nice (see gallery)

Hello All,
Well I have always been a Ford 150 fan, fortunately for me, I am now a true fan. I have recently purchased a new 2002 F150 XLT 4x4 and happy as hell. I love the truck, but am some what embarassed by the stock tires. I think they are small and hence why a tire mod will most likely be my first modification. I would love to lift the truck, but I have underground parking and for the time being, I will be limited to a tire mod. So, allow me to present my first question to the forum.
1) This is what I know, or presume to know. 245/75/16 on stock 16x7.0 rims. However, other members have posted that they have stock 16x8.0. How do I find out for sure what size rim I have? The label in the door jam on my truck says 16x7.0.
2) Presuming I have 16x7 rims, and according to the other posts, I am limited to 285/75/16 tire without a lift, will this tire fit on my rim??? I have one guy saying that I will have to get a bigger rim which is not really in the budget.
I suppose that was the biggest questions, however I have one more.
3) Presuming that the 285's do fit my rims, BFG's seem to be getting good marks from fellow members but I have not be by their shop yet. However in my part of the world, I have been getting good service from Bridgestone and Goodyear do not seem to know what the hell they are talking about. Any recommends on tire brand? Keep in mind that 90% of my driving is on-road with the other 10% for off-road in the desert or down to the beach ie. sand, not mud/dirt.
So far I am very impressed with the site, the maturity level of the members and the helpful advise. I'm looking forward to the replies.

Yes, you could squeeze a 285/75R16 on a 7.0 inch rim, but I don't reccomend it.
Too find out your rim width, any tire shop can measure it for you.
If you are interested in what a 285 bfg looks like on a F-150, check out my gallery.
IMO, just about any tire will perform the duties that you are asking, regardless of the name.

My mistake, but the tire is a 275, not a 285. Any chance that would fit on the 16X7 rim? Just wondering with the 10mm difference in tire size would make a difference in the final mounting options.
As for the rims, if I was to upgrade to a different rim should I stick to a 16 or go up to a 17? And for the width, in another post you said 10 was to wide, so that leaves an 8 or 9. Any suggestions!?!? Is there a "perfect" match for tire to rim?
