Engine Identification

Engine Identification
A friend of mine just bought a '79 F150 4x4. When he purchased it, the previouse owner claimed he did a motor swap to a 460. It's quite a nice truck, and runs great. The other day, while under it checking it all out, we stumbled upon this 'adapter' that is between/over top of the timing cover. This adapter is approx. 2" thick and at the bottom of it is two ports that are plugged. This adapter/plate is directly between the balancer and the timing cover.
We have talked to others and have heard everything from it being a marine engine, an industrial engine, an engine oil cooler with a crankshaft driven pump inside, etc.
While I'm not the most familier with big blocks, I'm at a bit of a loss. Can someone help us identify this engine and what that added cover is?
