I have heard that there is a problem with this 1995 F150 ignition switch. Can anyone confirm that. I can start the truck up but it won't turn off. Can anyone give me guidance on what this problem is wether it is something in the steering colum or the ignition switch. Does anybody know if there is a diagram of the ignition switch online?

On my 1996 f150 I had a condition where the ignition would turn with no key in it.
I was afraid that someone might start the truck with no key in it....
I replaced the ignition insert.
It was $14 at a local auto parts store.
I believe the key had to be in the run position and then I pushed up on the release pin from below to get it out.

i replaced my ignition insert, but the problem is still there. could it be the connection between the ignition and the switch, like a rod or something

 

The key & lock unit are connected to the switch by an actuating rod. I would suspect that the actuating rod is not properly pulling the nylon/plastic slide section in the switch assembly. The nylon into which the rod engages can wear & allow the rod to slide loosely, or the switch itself can move up & down on the column if the attaching nuts come loose. Tightening the nuts or replacement of the switch (not the key & lock unit) should fix the problem. Be sure to properly align/index the switch to the right positions of the key before tightening the nuts!

do i need to drop my steering column to do this?

 

Yes you will have to drop the steering column.I just took mine apart tonight.First disconnect the neg battery cable,two screws on back spokes of steering wheel,disconnect leads from horn and remove horn section,remove nut from steering wheel,install wheel puller,pull wheel,remove molding around steering colum.drop steering column,you will see a metal rod running from the top side of colum down to the ignition block mid way on column.two nuts hold the block to the column,in my case the ignition block had slipped not allowing the circuit to be made in the start possition.If the key turns and the rod is intact,remove the rod and work the ignition circuit manually.all the way forward is start,one notch back is run.I reconnected my battery cable and started the truck for this step.Its really not that hard to do,and if you plan to keep your truck this is gonna keep coming back.This is the third time I've been into the ignition switch.I don't even use the switch to engage the starter,I roll the switch to the run position then hit a start button i wired direct to the starter solenoid.What can i say it works.

We had a similar problem with our 89 ford. Took it apart to install new switch, but are having trouble getting the actuaing rod hooked back up. Any tips?

 

i'm in the process of hooking mine back up right now.I have a 95 f150 i had to get the shop manuals from ford to find out how to get the steering column apart to fix mine. the guy i talked to let me copy the pages i needed.
