After months of trying to decide on a new truck, I think I may have identified the reasons I'm leaning towards an F150....

1. Toyota hasn't come out with it's real full-size, Tundra replacement yet.

2. In 10-15 years when I'm at Joe Bob's garage in Bum-freak, USA trying to get a good deal on fixing the mysterious problem of why my truck won't run right... I bet I will be quicker, cheaper, and easier to to fix my F150 than the Japanse truck.

Any comments/experinces to convinvce me otherwise are welcome.

 

What makes the Ford easier to fix than any other truck?

From this statement it seems that other than the F150, your only considering those two ugly Japanese offerings huh?
Why no Chevy, GMC, or Dodge? Not up to the quality standards of the Nissans and Toys I guess, right?.......
If that's the case, I really, really hope you get the Ford- it's far and above a way better truck than those other two wannabes could ever be....and at least I can tolerate the thought of it.

 

Not exactly.

In 2002, I was leaning heavily towards a Dodge Ram quad cab. But a recent experince with a Grand Cherokee V8 going to crap at 85K miles lieft me gunshy. In 2003, I really liked my father-in-laws's Silverado 1500 HD, but I didn't need the 10 mpg of it's 6.0 liter engine in 4x4 configuration. Now, I'm leaning towards a F150. Nothing but good experinces from Japanese vehicles.

 

Never worked much on Japanese trucks, but the cars are not much fun. Always seems like my hands are too big to fit, and they are not very big at all!

 

working on japanese cars sucks, I know what u mean, my friend picked a few of them up really cheap, and we tried to fix them, u have to have 14 elbows and the hands of a two year old to work on them, buy american i have worked on both and the bid three are way easier to work on IMO

 

Hype or not, and I've never owned a Nissan, but Nissan's (published) design philosophy - engine wise, is to last 400,000+ miles. Toyota shoots for 300,000 miles - I can vouch for that, on their cars.

A lot of people around here own Chevy's & GMC's, good looking vehicle, but they fall apart faster than the people that I know who own Fords - I'm still driving a '77 F-100. Now that's something you can work on.

I'm looking at the Ford and the Titan right now - anyone can learn to live with a not-so pretty "face", as long as she's got it where it counts (he he). Personally, at first sight, I thought the F-150's interior was horrible. Now that I've seen it several times, I feel that I could live with it.

What I'm having a problem makeing a decision over is the Power ability for either mentioned above. The Ford has a flat torque curve above 1000rpm, which makes for low rpm towing and low fuel consumption. Whereas the Titan with its higher torque output, you have to run the RPM's up to over 2000 to match the Ford on the low end, and then keep running the rpm's up for more torque to keep up with the Ford. In the mean time your engine is experiencing more hours at higher rev's & chuggin more fuel - theoretically.

So, the delimma, buy Ford with the American quality mystique - remember I haven't bought a truck in over 20 years, or buy a Japanese built engine, in the Titan, and go with the Japanese quality & longevity mystique ???

 

I have a 88 Pathfinder that I bought new ( 15 years ago)

It towed my 18' boat for 6 years and has 135k on it. I only drive it back and forth to work now, hence the "low" miles, but wouldnt be afraid to take it ANYWHERE...and back.

My EXPY is my 1st Ford, bought it about 5 months ago used. It is now my "tow" vehicle.

Before I had the Nissan, I has a Chev S-10 that I bought new in 83. With 32,000 miles on it, I thought it was would leave me stranded at any moment!

I guess my point is............... dont knock the Japanese vehicles for quality. The only thing I have had to replace on the Nissan in 15 years is a throwout bearing.

When I do buy again (I prefer SUVs) I will look at another Epedition, a Chev Tahoe/Suburban, AND the Nissan Armada.

I saw my 1st Armada last week, and 1st impressions were good.

 

1. Fine. No argument to bother with here or anywhere.

2. If the engine is still under the cowl like the 97-03 models, think again. With so many parts being outsourced now, I doubt Joe Bob has trouble getting "foreign" parts at a decent price at that. Neeeeext.

P.S. Wrong wheel drive in any make sucks to work on.

Grey, the computer that controls the slushbox will do the job for you in either case. If you had a stick shift (boo at no manual options!) you might have the lugging issue, but the tranny will keep the engine in the beef of the powerband.

That's not an issue.

So drive what makes you happy....freedom of choice rules!
