You might get him because he will have a sluggish start with the high first gear of the five speed. If he can get off of the line quickly, he will probably beat you. If he had a four speed stick he could definitely beat you. I think that the 350 tbi has around 200hp and 300lb ft of torque, but I am not too sure. A throttle body 350 can run with a Vortec 350, even though a vortec is rated higher.

well a half mile is really a long way, i had an 89 f-150 with a stock 302 and 3.55ls and it'd get to around 78mph in the 1/4 and post a time of around 16.9sec. i also had an 81 datsun 280zx that ran 17.0 in the 1/4, when i raced my friends 96 ranger 4.0 we would be neck and neck, when i raced my friend in my dads 95 chevy C2500 6 lug with 350 and automatic, the ranger stomped my a$$ and as far as teh TBI vs vortec, the TBI will NOT be anywhere close to the vortec truck, i know from racing them. you may be able to win by default however because he may have a 99mph limiter on his truck, and you have none. i can blow the doors off of my friends 96 ram 1500 with a 360 in the 1/4(i run a 15.6 in my new truck, to his 16.5) but he can and does catch me as soon as i hit my 103mph gov. we've had his truck to 117 and then decided to back it off a lil bit. i did race an 87 8lug 3/4 ton chevy(TBI 350, 4 speed) with my truck and it would be very close off the line(he'd have a lil advantage) but then i'd pull away from him. anyways, sorry bout the long post, just glad to see i'm not the only reneck out racing trucks on teh back roads, let us now how it turns out.

An 87 and 88 chevy pickup are two different things as far as aerodynamics. Are the 350's in them the same? A buddy of mine had an 88 w/ a 350, and he could keep up with my 77 F-150 w/ a 400 when it was stock. If your's isn't stock and his is, chances are you'll win.

The 350s in the 87s and 88s are the same. Some 86 Chevys are TBI also. A TBI is nearly as powerful as a Vortec. My dad owns both, so I know. A Vortec may win in a race, but not by very much if the pickups have similar setups. Vortecs have no low end power.

What makes a vortech a "vortech" and better than the old TBI's? How do they make more top end power?

I had an '88 Chevy with the 350 and 5-speed manual once, and I will say one thing for it, that truck would fly. I don't think I'd run one if I were you, especially with a 302 under the hood.

I just got a FAT Coke out of it. It was Hilarious I Bent the chevy over and SPANKED HIM BAD!
He stalled it on take off so I let off(I felt sorry for him) And he restarted and redlined ,dropped the clutch and I punched it rolling obout 5 MPH and waxed him.I was told by my passanger that I was atleast 8 trucks ahead and he claimed he WRAPPED it back round to the 25MPH line what????
I was in a truck about 500lbs heavier , friend, fuel to boot. His truck is a Ragged out pile 2,000 Miles on aNew GM TBI 350 and clutch and it's already going through a qt of oil ever 500 miles
Dustin
PS I changed the oil in my baby and washed her for winning the race

i had a tbi 350 in a 95 Z71 with 3.73 and a 5 speed.. i'll tell you that was a quick truck (for a truck). it was by no means anything compared to a lightning, srt or 454ss... but who would expect it to be? it was faster than my pop's 97 Z71 with the vortech and 3.42's and 4sp auto.

i'd have to admit both of those chey's are faster than my curreny V-10 F-250.

they may be faster, but if we had a little tow-off... i'd pull both of them chevy's all over the place.... no comparison in towing power.

a friend has a 96 2500ld 4X4 witht the tbi 350, automatic and 4:11 gears. The truck can come off the line real strong, but runs out of stream once it get out of 1st gear. I was able to beat him in my old f150 2Wd with a 300 I6, 5-speed and 3:55 gear, but I probably had a lot less weight. My boss has a 92 Z71 5 speed stepside with the 350, and it flies. It will take my f250 at speed, but I can whoop em off the line.

i always loved runnin my Z down the interstate wide open... it didnt have that 98mph cut off that it seems every other chevey truck has ... i dont really know how fast i was going, the speed-o only read up to 100 i think but i konw i would get some puzzled looks :confused :when i'd start passin the camaros that had that 115 cut off. man that was the greatest feeling in the world... i'd get them off the line until about 55,(3rd gear) be right on thier bumper until about 90, then i'd slowly pass them

i'm aware that it was stupid and very unsafe to take a 4x4 truck over 95 mpg. i never claimed to be the brightest bulb when i was in high shcool... i dont do things like that now... well maybe sometimes... but the roads up here are alot flatter and more straght than they were back home.
