can anybody give me info on how to get the fan clutch off the water pump shaft? it is threaded on and there's not room for a wrench in there. i have cutting torches, but, haven't got that mad yet. thanks, bill

 

I had a 93 F150,302 and the fan clutch to water pump was held on by (4) nuts and lock washers via studs in the water pump pulley. Even if yours is an I6 i'm sure its similar. The hole of the fan clutch that connects to the water pump pulley shaft might be rusted on there. Spray some PB Blaster in there and let it sit for awhile. Other then that,I have no idea!

 

the clutch itself is held on by a left hand thread nut, so you have to turn it backwards(righty loosy, lefty tighty) to loosen it. If it's stuck some rust eater or similar penetrating oil will do good.

 

pfogle,why was mine held on by (4) nuts and washers? Was mine different? I know this because I replaced the water pump!

 

Did you buy the vehicle new? If not someone may have swapped the engine.. On my 92 it's held on by a nut.....

 

I bought it used in 97. But when I bought the water pump it was just as I explained.I even had to transfer the studs from my water pump to the new one. There is a black pulley with (4) holes in it that slips over the studs onto the water pump dowel shaft,for the serpentine belt to ride on,then the fan clutch mounts on the studs and is centered on the water pump dowel shaft. And,I know the engine was the original because I ran the numbers to make sure it was. I do this on all vehicles I buy to make sure there is no surprises waiting for me. Also,the new fan clutch I bought replaced the one on it; 1993!

 

It's hard to say then, it was 92 or 93 that they changed, so I'm sure there is a mix out there. It's kinda like my '79 olds having a '78 carb on it from the factory.
