You are comparing two different cars in two different classes here. Kind of like the Mustang GT vs the Chevette. I guess its the only thing that chevy has to bring to the table but I will be the first to say this is kind of unfair.
Seiously though, it's not even a comparison. The GT wins in every category except price. Against the cars that compare to it, it wins in price, too. Ever looked into buying an Enzo????
Well, you guys are comparing apples and oranges. The GT40 will beat a 'vette everytime, becuz its a pure bred race car built from the factory. It's made to compete with those whiny itailian V10s. The Corvette from the factory is not made to compete with those even though it has good race capabilities form the factory, its not built like the GT40. It can be made ot run with/beat the GT40, look at the Le Mans corvettes. Europeans are goung nuts over that V8 rumble, guess they got tired of the whiny V10s and V12s.
Have you all seen the 2005 Corvette? The standard one now has 400 HP from a 6.0L V-8, and I've heard the Z06 will have closer to 500 HP. If that's true, I'd like to see a comparision between the GT, the Viper, and the '05 Z06. And, I'll bet the Chevy costs less than the other two!
I believe the new Ford GT is a 2005 model, and it will spank any Corvette. It is a race car in the purist form and it competes with Ferrari, Porche and Lamborghini...the Corvette isn't in the same league. You could buy 3 Corvette's for the price of one Ford GT.
The Vette, (even the Z06), will likely cost half of what the GT does. BUT, it's not even in the same league. Even with 500 hp, it won't be a "super car" like the GT. The overall design of the GT is basically for racing. The Vette is not, although highly modified C5's have done well in some circuits. The torque difference between the two engines will be sickening.
The difference is making 500 peak hp and the GT making 500 hp with such a huge broad torque curve. That was obvious when the GT was tested against some of the other cars in it's class. Even though they made nearly as much hp, they could not come close to keeping up around the track. The torque makes all the difference. Even a highly skilled driver cannot keep the engine in it's powerband enough to overcome the torque difference.
the ford gt is as extreme as it gets, theres not really anything else you can do with the car.....this is where a comparison on the two could get interesting. allow a tuner to toy with a vette awhile, like lingenfelter or someone to try and maximize the vette's capability. even if you sink 20k into a vette, your still at half the cost of the gt. i think this would really make an interesting comparison, it would be two peak performers. the thing with the vette is that its strong from the factory, but theres a huge aftermarket for the things and you can make them perform with almost any car
The 2005 Corvette will have 400hp from a 6.0, the Z06 for 2006 will have a rumored 500 hp. It's all in the Feb Car and Driver. Big deal though...it still won't be a Ford GT.
