Hi all,

I'm a newbe to this site as well as Diesel's in general. What is the gas mileage in a 3/4 ton 4x4 with a diesel? I read the posts on the 6.0L Ford but what can I expect overall between the 3 or 5? Thanks.

It's going to vary widely, IMO. Realistically, winter all around mileage should be mid-teens or so. Towing mileage will depend greatly on load, terrain and speed. From 9-13 is the range I read about the most and what I've seen in my dmax and 6.0PSD.

Best unloaded interstate driving I've seen so far on my 6.0 is 18.5 compared to a best ever of 21.3 in my dmax.

The mileage on both motors is always way better than what I got out of my big block gassers by half again more to double.

 

Our Cummins HO 6-speed manual gets 16 consistently, and it's loaded 24/7 (we have a utility bed on it). When towing 10+ tons total combined weight, our mileage only drops to 13. This is significantly better than the Fords/GMs we've used, and it's a lot better than what the guys with the 6.0L Fords are getting. I've seen people on here talking about the Cummins being hard on fuel...I have NO clue where they are hearing that from.

 

I get 18 combined with my 04 ford, I got 17 to 18 with my 01 dodge CTD.

I'm getting 16 mpg with my 7.3, that's with my lift, tires and programmer at +80hp.

 

10 mpg from ky. to destin fl, 80 mph, boat is 28 long, 9-8 wide, 12-6 tall. the faster you go, the more it will drink. 10,000 lbs.

 

diesel doesn't have very good gas mileage.

 

As compaired to what? I have owned 4 diesel trucks, Ive seen mileage in the low 20's to high teens. I currently get 18 with my new PSD. On my 01 dodge I saw 13 MPG towing a 11400 lb 5th wheel! Not to bad!

If it has to be explained, you'll never get it. Diesel does not get gas mileage. (Sarcasm) At least that how I took it.

 

He is referring to the guy that's only getting 10 mpg out of his 6.0L diesel. That is horrible fuel economy. Ford boasted how the new PSD was going to be so fuel efficient and everything, and from what I've seen they are worse! If I bought one and got 10 miles per gallon towing a boat, I would take it back to the dealer and demand my money back.

Compared to the competition it is bad "gas mileage". I think that's what he meant.

 

On my last three diesel I have noticed that If I keep the RPMs under 2000 I get good MPG

If you run diesel instead of gas in the 6.0 it'll probably get better mileage. I think that's what he meant.

 

I'm at 29k miles now and when it's warm I see about 21 mpg on the hwy and about 17 mpg in town. Last time I towed the fifth wheel (11,000 lbs) I averaged 12 mpg in the Ozarks.

 

the problem w/diesel to gas comparason is that people dont realize the weight. they compare the gas mileage of their f150 to the diesel, which is alot heavier. lets compare the gas V10 in the f250 and you'll probably see a lot worse gas mileage than diesel. the diesel's may not get record breaking gas mileage empty but when you throw a few tons on there it barely changes. a big rig probably gets only a few mpg's better empty than w/a load. as for the low fuel mileage in the new diesels: i often see people in diesels going 80 mph down the highway. what do you expect. if you run it at 2600 rpm's the fuel will hurt you. if you keep it under 2k, as AAFD stated, you'll get a few mpg's better. diesel's are made for slower speeds carrying a lot of weight. if you run around empty all day every day and want to drive 80mph get s gasser.

 

the best way to compare diesel to gas is to look at Volks Wagens or other small vehicles. I know whith Isuzu mini trucks you REALY see how much better diesel millage. In the 80-82 KBs whith the same set up, 1.8L millage will be 23mpg, 2.2L Deisel millage will be 45mpg. Theres a good comparision, power on both motors is roughly the same as well.
