This is my second Explorer... first one was a 92 that I sold a couple of years ago... at the time it had 147,000 on it and was running great. Had to replace the trans at 80,000, but that was due to lack of maint. Will never do that again, now I live by the 15,000 mile rule. I bought a 99 Subaru Legacy SUS to replace it, but missed the truck too much, so we got rid of my wife's car so I could buy my 99 Explorer. This one has 47,500 on it and it runs great. Just did the trans service on it for the first time since the car was used... what a bitch it was to figure that one out, but the next time will be much easier. I plan to keep this Explorer until it completely falls apart.... which from what I see... I have a long way to go.

I've got 134000 on my '99 4.0 SOHC. Replaced brakes and tires a couple of times. Change oil ~3,000 miles, Quaker 10w30. Use a K&N air filter. Changed tranny fluid twice, those 18 bolts are a b***h. Pull my 18' bass boat 1 - 5 hours per week, depends where I'm going. Recently replaced the TPS and IPC.

179,000 on my 96 EB with 4 litre pushrod. only old non-maintenance problem is gasket between timing cover and block leaking antifreeze(and not wanting to remove engine to fix).
unfortunately, today the transmission made some ugly noises warning me to head home asap or risk walking. i notice that transmissions are a recurring replacement or repair item on these thread replies. i know i will at least r & r the tranny myself. am i better off to get it rebuilt or get a low mileage unit at parts yard.
explorer and our 93 mark 8 with 150,000+ miles have both been great vehicles, but both of them have weak trannies.

Just bought a 92 Eddie Bauer 4x4 with 151,000 on the clock. Didn't make it 200 miles and the cheapo NAPA alternator locked up - rebuild date was 7/1/03 on it!
Other than that, things look to be in good shape, interior is showroom new, exterior has rock chips and the normal rust starting. Put valve cover gaskets on it, engine looks clean. Hope we get 200k out of it!
