I have a '92 F150 ext. cab with a 4.9L and E4OD trans. The trans started shuddering in 2nd gear. It is worse when I slow to make a turn and it downshifts from 3rd to 2nd when I accelerate. Shudder also occurs when taking off from a stop and the trans up shifts to 2nd. This shudder ranges from very light to "feels like driving over railroad tracks". Sometime the shudder doesn't happen, that is when I get slippage. I can "ease" the truck up to speed and have no problems in up shifting. I changed the fluid and filter, problems have subsided a little. Fluid was dark. Truck had 129K when I bought it, didn't know the maintenance history of it. Haven't changed fluid before now, fear of catastrophic failure like I had with my C6. 211K showing on odometer. Rebuild time, or component/sensor problem with 2nd gear? Thanks for your help.

 

Did you notice any metal shavings or lots of thick gunk in pan when fluid was changed?

 

Yes! The magnet in the pan had thick gunk on it. I know it is metal , very very fine, couldn't feel any individual shavings, but it was sticking to the magnet.

 

This is called Torque chatter,
I have found it on the web before, but had diffuculty trying to find it again. I changed my fluid and also have not resolved the problem. Railroad tracks is the proper reference to what the feeling and sound is in 2nd and 3rd gears. I have 107,853 on my truck. I took it to the dealer and asked what could be done, there is a kit to fix this, but I elected not at $700-1000 dollar fix. So I have elected to live with it until it doesn't move or work anymore. This is a common problem with the E40d trnasmissions is what has been explained to me, hope this helps, your not alone.

Yup sorry to say its just a matter of time before she gives up , I had similar prob at 204,000 miles fluid change didnt help but spending $1200.00 bucks to get it completely rebuilt fixed it. Just make sure they flush the system out if you do go with a rebuild if not you just wasted all that cash for nothing.

The AR70 tranny in my Crown Vic is doing the same thing. 3 tranny shops told me the same thing- Needs total rebuild, changin fluid makes it worse. However I've heard other owners say they just drained or changed the torque converter. Found out that most repair places don't drain the torque converter (where two thirds of the fluid is) during a tranny service. I've had 'em try to sell me a rebuild when all it needed was a $15 modulater valve (C6) on the outside of the case!I bet if ya went to a tranny shop to ask directions they'd tell ya you need to rebuild the tranny. On the electric shift trannys there are sensors that go bad, springs in the valve body that break and servos that could need replacing but you have to remove the cat converter to get to it. I'm not a tranny expert but I'm researching all I can before I go to another tranny shop! Good luck to ya.

 

Sorry to hear but it sounds just like what happened to mine. Railroad track vibration is right on. I had it rebuilt at 125K. The pan was full of that gunk. Kinda reminded and felt like graphite to me. Anyway. i had a freinf of a friend do it for me for cost. Still ended up running me $950. It got a new HD converter, I busted the OD sprage in 3 pieces, and roached 3 bearings. He said he was amazed it didn't blow the case apart. I had an accumulator kit installed as well. It runnsgood and strong know. If you want to change the fluid inthe converter, pop the rumber plug on the bottom of the bell housing and rotate engine till you see a small plug. It will take a very long time to drain it. Very small hole.

 

I've never done it, but I'm assuming that to refill the TC you just start the vehicle and start adding fluid again?

Update on the shudder. After changing the fluid/filter, the shudder lessened. I was told to add some Shudder Fix, I did so, and the shudder is all but gone. Only problem left now is slippage, seems worse when the trans downshifts to 2nd. Also notice it on take off from a stop, however manually down/up shifting seems to lessen if not eliminate the slip. Anyway, I seem to have "bought" myself a little time to decide what to do with the trans. I can't get ballpark estimates from a trans shop, but have seen prices ranging from $950 to $1800, here and other places on the net. Thanks for your input.

 

big ric put about half the fluid in then start the truck. Let idel and check. repeat. It takes something like 15-16 quarts of oil.

What motor is in each truck? Are they both 2wd or 4wd?
