certified 5R100W cracked 2nd day

I had my transmission replaced on tuesday of this week. Ford Certified with
3yr/100k warranty. the tech overfilled the tranny by about 2 quarts and it spewed out of the vent on the way home 40 miles from the dealership.
The next day I towed 300 miles and several times lots of smoke out the back of the van. V10 2005 extended xlt. Got to where we were parking and took the dog house off and washed the tranny. Got my big spot light out and a mirror and found a crack about 4 inches long in the housing right behind the dip stick. The tranny had been painted black so it was real easy to see the fresh aluminum in the hairline crack, and the oil oozing out of it at idle.
What would cause that thing to crack? Or was it cracked in shipping? Or was it cracked by the mechanics?
Mark, what you think would be appreciated?
I went to a dealer this morning and they saw it and are waiting to hear back from Ford about what they are going to do. Hopefully I will have this resolved quickly. I replaced my old tranny so I would not have these exact issues on the road. Any input appreciated. Andrew.

Its always a possibility (not a probability) that the casting had a fault, it was dropped, etc. and got past QA inspection but I would really suspect installation related.

It could have been misassembled, too. If a snap ring came out of a clutch it can crack the case.

So now RMP is saying they will not warranty the transmission. It leaked from the first time I drove it. I went back to the dealer the next morning and told him it was leaking.
I had a conference call with ford customer service and the two dealers on Friday and they said they were going to get RMP to warranty it. Monday the dealer where the van is called me and said they will not warranty it. I have buy another transmission and pay a $1000 core charge because the tranny is cracked. I am having a real problem here. I was told that my $3500 tranny with warranty was good at any ford dealer in the country. I went with Ford so they could deal with warranty knowing that they had more clout than I would have by myself dealing with a company. They charged me 1,000 bucks more than I could have bought the same transmission on line from RMP for and now I am being told that a 2 day old tranny that leaked from the get go will not be warrantied. Can someone help me please. Ford better come through on this.
Andrew.

Wow that is some crazy BS. What is the point of a warranty when you get the run around like this? Best of luck to you brother and I hope they man up sooner than later.
Unless they just want the lawsuit in which case might as well start shopping lawyers.

Ford dealership in Massena NY installed it.
I contacted them at noon and they told me they would talk to the rep for RMP. Today the rep said to the dealer here in Owego NY that RMP would do something but didn't say what. They have wasted two days of time they could have ordered the tranny. Now they are saying three to 10 days to get the tranny. The only responses I have gotten are when I get on the phone to Ford customer service and they make some communication happen. I have had so much run around since Friday that it has ruined my confidence in Ford.
I use this van for my living. I am fortunate that in 30 years of driving Fords and 2 million miles I have never been in this situation before. I maintain my stuff. Just glad I didn't give into the temptation to buy a new truck.AE

I don't see how they can deny the warranty when it was installed by a Ford dealer. I wish there was something I could do to help, but I don't know what that would be. I no longer have any pull at all at Ford.

Thank you Mark for your concern, appreciate all the responses. It looks like RMP is dragging their feet and that will mean I have to rent a vehicle for $150 bucks a day plus miles and fuel, or cancel the meetings and that would be horrible. Its not over yet and I will let you know how it all turns out.
You guys care and that means a lot these days.
Andrew.

The tech where I have my van now told me they could have rebuilt my transmission, which wasn't offered at the other dealership, it was too small I guess to have a tech with that capability. I would have preferred that, but had no option. Hopefully I can come to the place where I trust this new RMP tranny. In the fall I may look into getting a used one and having it rebuilt if I have my doubts.
I don't know why Ford has no more remanufactured units available. They are either using them all up or have stopped doing them themselves.

My 4R100 was cracked, I never knew it, it finally got to where when you put it in gear it took some RPM to get it to engage, but at 146,000 miles, I knew it was due a rebuild, the shop here was amazing, he saw a crack, went and found one in the back of his shot to rebuild in it's place, and was less than $1800 for the entire thing.

Okay, just to update. RMP has completely dropped the ball. My Ford dealer in Massena NY has really stepped up to the plate for me.
They ordered a Jasper Transmission this morning delivered to the dealer here in Owego NY for installation. They are going to deal with RMP and dismantle the tranny themselves and see what made it crack, then proceed with the warranty claim.
They are covering the installation cost right now and will claim that on the RMP warranty too.
They said they will not get another Ford Certified tranny knowing what they know now.
I am very impressed and will be talking with them about whether I owe them any money for the initial cost difference between the two transmissions. I don't mind paying for service if I get it and I am impressed at this time.
I will keep you guys posted. I am going to feel a lot better driving knowing that I have a Jasper when I am going down the road. Thanks for the input AE

Sorry to hear about your issues with this Andrew---it almost defies understanding. Why or how this RMP outfit is denying what appears to be a valid claim is unbelievable.

My guess is the dealership has been through this before with them and no doubt prevailed. Not trying to be too cynical but its rare anyone would take on the financial burden for something not of their doing.

The dealer's actions and willingness to step up is quite admirable regardless what motivates them. They deserve a few notes of thanks, perhaps an email or two from FTE members? Sign me up!

Please do update us Andrew---this could greatly affect the Ford warranty on reman'd parts and assemblies from them.
