Smog vs No Smog

Smog vs No Smog
I am getting ready to pull my motor which is a 400. I am going to replace it. The price difference between a smog long block and no smog long block is a few hundred difference. What is the deal? I live in Indiana, pretty sure there is no regulation on smog. Can anyone give me some pointers? I would like to buy the no smog long block as it is cheaper!!

A smogged long block will have the crossovers for the EGR system, as well as ports for the AIR injection. If you're starting from scratch with a new rebuild and can do your own intake, carburetor and distributor, I don't see any harm in the no-smog version so long as you don't have to pass any emissions testing (you need to be "sure" instead of "pretty sure"). I'm a little surprised you're offered two versions and not just a smogged long block.

Yup, all the main part stores around here (autozone, Oreilly, Advance etc) all offer both versions.
I am sure there are no smog regulations. I live in a county in southern Indiana where there are houses with dirt floors. Our county also has no zoning laws so you can build whatever you want to build on your property with no permits. I will dig a little to see what I can find but I have never ever had to pass any sort of emission test. My wife's family owns the largest body shop in the area. They build hot rod cars along with insurance work and they too have never had to pass any sort of emissions. But I will look it up to make sure.
Yes, this will be a new build. New intake, new carb, everything.....

On "smog" vs "Non smog" everything has to match to get a good result. The carb and distributor in particular are calibrated one way or the other. EGR helps reduce knock so the carb is lean and distributor more advanced in some situations with "smog". Also the (blessed) vacuum lines will change somewhat. Works OK if everything is changed/tuned as posted above.

Why on earth would you consider a Smog block if this is a new build?!
Thats like choosing a broken leg over keeping yours intact!
Im sure they offer it incase a vehicle is smog equipped and the block needs to be changed, for cracks and what not.
I cant even imagine trying to find and buy all the smog stuff that is shoehorned into my truck.
