Well today was my day. Over torqued a small bolt and now
I get to remove it.
You know that little bolt that holds the turbo oil feed line onto
the top of the oil filter housing? Well you know the one I broke.
Set the torque wrench too high and you know the story.
So tomorrow I get the battery for the drill all charged up and get
the reverse twist bits out and remove that little sucker from it hole.
I am taking the night off and will chill. Also the cats were bouncing
off the walls and so I went in to keep them calm. And once I was in
they calmed right down. Oh well.

Well today I start to fix my little mess. I talked to Josh on the phone for a while
to calm my self down some on the drive over to Ford to pickup an oil cooker
gasket set. Thought I could get away with just pulling the filter and upper oil cooler
housing. But one little bolt said NO. It's under the intake and I don't see any way to
get at it. So fast-forward. Turbo is out and surprisingly it was not as bad as I thought
it was going to be. I did find I need to work on some of the harness do to oil making
it mushy in a few places. Anyone got an easy way to clean it? I did do the tricks
DieselTechRon talked about and sprayed the clamps on the turbo with some penetrating
oil also hit the turbo pedestal bolts. Worked like a charm. One thing that did not work
that he shows is removing the alt wire from the battery clamp and flipping the harness
back over the engine so it not in the way. I found that I would also have to unhook
the A/C clutch and a pressure switch. Then I would have to work the cabling back
around the A/C compressor and after that I can flop it over. Not going to happen
unless in the daylight I see something I missed by the light of the devious device
called the most appropriate name of Trubble-Light. What a pain
Never where you need it shining or not shining (in the eyes) also the cord won't settle
so that you can turn it just so. You get the idea. The only nice thing it's one of the CFL
units I got from Boeing Surplus years ago. So not metal housing that gets blazing hot.
So tomorrow aka Later today I pull the intake and hope that the gaskets are not old and
crusty. I will clean the intake soot. Then clean the muck in the valley. Nasty mess from
a mis-pour of oil into the crankcase. Then fix the broken bolt and back together it goes.
I can see a CCV mod in the future.
Depending on how things go I may pull the #8 and do a little polishing of the spool valves
just to get that out of the way. If I do you can bet that there will be a video of the IDS power
balance at cold start after that is done.
One photo tonight and a thought. Don't break that bolt.
One other thing I thought I should mention. With the EGR system off the valve sure
is nice and clean. Just a little bit of dust on the one side. It's been in for at least 7K miles.

If I'd have seen this earlier I'd have told you to take a small screwdriver or punch and try tapping the offending screw counterclockwise to see if it would just screw out. Sometimes you can catch an edge where a thread breaks and use that edge to tap on and the screw comes right out.
The little lock nuts that are all over the engine are 6mm IIRC and you can get a package of 10 at lowes for really cheap. If the one on the GPCM you are missing is the bottom of the bracket then leave it off anyway. It's just a PIA

It doesn't take long for the CAC to clear out. Depends on how much boost you put through it.....
Sean: just a tip on the trouble light: I picked up this 3 pack of LED lamps that strap over your head at Costco for $10. Probably one of the neater things since I picked up the Ridgid compact drill driver set (lifetime warranty on everything, including all wearable items) with the LED lights built into them. On the lamps you strap on your head: I've crawled under houses, walked across dark camp grounds, read books late at night and yes even worked under and over engines -- with both hands free (and man that little impact gun works suweet on machinery) .
By the way, Home Depot lowered the price on the set I got: 1 compact 2-speed drill, 1 compact impact driver, 2 18V Li batts, charger, radio and carry bag for $179 (if you"find" a Lowes 10% off coupon they'll take that off too ). You have to register the tools for the lifetime warranty, but you'll never buy another battery . Bonus round for me is I bought an 18V Ridgid cordless combo set (NiCad) of full size tools 11 years ago when HD 1st came out with them -- have gotten several free batteries, but the way cool thing is: the new batteries interchange with the old; any tool works with any battery! Not too many manufacturers do that! As I understand it, Milwaukee makes the Ridgid stuff for Home Depot...
Well I have an update and one ****-OFF item. Seems that someone that
was in to the engine used RTV to seal the heater outlet vs replacing that
stupid O-ring. Once I got my hands down around and felt the RTV I was
able to break it free and then remove it.
I was surprised that the intake was not chocked with oil soaked soot. But then
again my EGR is turned off. The water in the soak tank looked like very strong
coffee and I could not see the intake at the bottom.
Right now I am doing some cleaning and will pull the top of the oil filter and cooler
housing once it cools off a bit.
EDIT : The reason it looks wet I had already sprayed it with the Simple Green
BTW I am using the Aviation grade Simple Green to do the cleaning.
Then after the soak I will hit the intake with the pressure washer to
plow any thing that is left out.
yep--today-not working on the truck but was updating software on a buddies fish finder today and I was trying to be careful and not fall out of the boat (was in his garage) I slipped backwards and did a header into the console--he asked if I was drunk lol.

Anyway UPDATE. UPDATE
The little ratbasterd is out of there.
Got it in the drill press and used a die grinder burr to start my hole
then moved up a drill bit. I stepped up one more size and thought it looks
good to back onto the bench and tapped in an easy-out and took a small
wrench and gave it a turn. Odd I thought I had it and started to pull on the
easy-out, It was tight so I gave it a 2nd turn and watched closely and the
bolt end was moving.
I have a video I will share later tonight when I took my borescope and shot
some video of the inside of the coolant side of the oil cooler.
