4.9l firing order
#17
I have that information right in front of me. Ok, you have a hold down screw at the 10 o'clock and the 4 o'clock position. Your rotor turns clockwise. Number one cylinder is at 3 o'clock, just before the hold down screw at 4 o'clock. Then continue clockwise with 5, 3, 6, 2 & 4. You should be in business!

There is no specific place #1 has to be, as was stated. IT's all relative to where the rotor is facing when the #1 piston is at TDC. There might be a common direction when Ford put the distributors in the engine, but if it's been removed, that is all out. I try and get it back in about the same position as it gives good room for adjustment, concerning the vacuum advance. You want to have ample room to turn the distributor without hitting anything.

This just happened to me this weekend. I thought it was a dead cell in my battery.
First: Pull #1 spark plug (disconnect negative battery cable) - one closest to the front of the truck.
Second: Placed 15/16th (?) socket over crank pulley while placing a finger in the #1 spark plug hole.
Third: Rotate engine until you feel compression pushing against finger.
Fourth: Place something long, skinny and non-metallic in #1 piston spark plug hole (I used a stick).
Fifth: Rotate engine until the piece of non-metallic material cycles up and back down just alittle bit (This will be Top Dead Center [TDC]).
Sixth: Pull distributor cap and look where the rotor button is facing (This will be number 1 for your firing order).
Seventh: Follow clockwise 153626 as your firing order off the new number 1 cylinder location.
Eight: Hook back up the battery and start the truck.
Ninth: Get a timing light to set base timing at 10*.

frustrated Ford owner
the reason the reason I didn't say what the problem was because I was frustrated at the time working on that truck all day I have a 1996 F-150 XLT with a 4.9 inline 6 EFI I have replaced just about everything on it and she still the thing is cursed it's one problem after another all it is is just my plow truck I cannot afford another truck and I've been trying to keep this one together apparently putting new parts on it just doesn't work I have gotten it all the way down by putting in new distributor new pickup unit ,and starter, alternator, I have not been able to get it started for over 2 months now ,and I'm just getting frustrated with a truck apparently Ford's mistake was a 1996 F-150,... I can buy parts for every other truck no problem whatsoever 87 to 95 no problem 97 and up no problem but try to find parts for a 1996 they want to talk your head off your ears and then tell you that there's nothing available one year only and to make it even worse there are so many cables and wires and everything going to that motor and half of them don't work so frustrated with that truck it is a 5-speed manual transmission and now I cannot even get it to start I've checked the firing order make sure that the timing was properly set no one has touch anything it just will not start does anybody have any type of Clue that's why I was trying to see a video of any type of representation just to get some idea to all concerned parked Ford truck no start no run pissed off with that Ford truck

The #1 is two past the hold down at the 4 o'clock position. See this page.1992 Ford Firing Orders
I set mine up like this and it runs like new. Please note mine is fuel injected and has a 'Y' in the vin.
