3-speed manual rebuild questions

Hello all! Well, I replaced the rear diff input seal w/o a problem. With the sync shaft out I moved up to the trans and noticed it was leaking from every orifice possible. So I removed it and long story short have now got the transmission taken apart. My question: should I stop where I am and drop it off at the local trans shop or replace the seals myself and assemble it myself ('53 F100 3-spd column shift)? I'd rather do it myself but at times I tend to dig myself deeper and deeper until it becomes painful trying to pull myself back out. Advice?

Did you lay out the parts neatly in the order of disassembly and do you have a nice clear parts breakdown ?

That's the HD trans, Pete, he has the LD. There are only a couple of gaskets and seals, no reason to take the whole trans apart. See below, and check with VanPelt for the parts: VANPELT SALES LLC homepage

Ford F100 3 speed trans

It's a very simple trans to rebuild, but of course we rebuild them so we know the drill. There are a few funky steps for disassembly and reassembly. You should have a dummy countershaft in order to put it back together. I think the worst part can be removing the 2 tapered pins that hold the shifter shafts in place in the housing. They sometimes require carefully drilling them out if badly rusted in place. Plenty of other subtle things that we check and watch for that the average home shop guy may not catch. But....overall an easy trans to do.

Thanks! I think I may he in a little trouble because I found a pretty good size chunk of metal in the gear box....and it's not a piece gear either. It is from the tail shaft housing! I stood the assembly on end ( shaft still in housing) and found that a piece of the housing on the seam was missing. I will post pix this afternoon when I get home. I may be in a world of hurt if this is a show stopper.....and it looks to be so.

Broken trans case...

Let me look at a couple of those castings in our core stock. I don't think there would be a missing part of the casting there, but I'll know more after I check.

gysgtbigdaddy, I rebuilt my T98, its a heavy duty 4 speed. One thing I found is mounting the transmission casing onto an engine stand is very nice. Better than trying to wrestle the thing. If you need parts I used Chuck's Trucks in Connecticut he was able to find everything I needed and I needed it all. Semper Fi!

I got mine from MAC's

Ford Pickup Truck Transmission Gasket Set - 3 Speed Or Overdrive - F100 48-30756-1 (Mac's Part# B8AZ-7153-A) 1 $14.95
Ford Pickup Truck Transmission Overdrive Housing Seal - All With Overdrive - F100 48-13169-5 (Mac's Part# 21C-7052) $5.00

I don't have a overdrive 3 Speed but they said this seal works in standard 3 speeds as well as Overdrives. Went together like a dream. My intermediate gear was a bit chewed up but I couldn't find one cheap so I put it back together without replacing it.

That's awesome! On mine when it was all said and done I think I spent almost a grand but I did need to replace all of my gears.

Thanks for all the help!! I've decided not to break it all the way down and just replace the gaskets.

Got it all laid out (this is as far as I broke it down):

I think I put the inserts on the hub correctly (#7A044):

Since I didn't break the whole thing down, where do the 15 rollers go? Are they #7121 and/or #7118 on the breakdown? Out of these 4 locations where do I need to look for them? Maybe around the output shaft once inside the input shaft??
