93 3.0, wont pass emmisions.

I have a 93 Ranger with a 3.0 with 225k on it and I am trying to pass emmisions in Tennessee. I had it tested once and my HC was to high so home I go change plugs and wires, run 2 tanks of 93 octane thru it and take it back today and now my HC level is higher than b4. Any good suggestions out there about what to try, I was thinking of running a can of Guarenteed to pass thru it and see what that does. One friend said Seafoam but Im not sure if that will work.

High HC is a rich mixture or burning oil.

Is your PCV system working ok? Is your engine making a lot of blow-by? Did you do an oil change right before the test?

Your vehicle is OBD I, right? Pull any codes?

Yes it is an obd1 system and pulling no codes. I haven't done an oil change recently and replaced the pcv around 3 months ago. I don't know how to test for blow by but I don't seem to lose any more oil than normal and notice no smoke. I usually use Lucas in my oil but I didn't last oil change cause it was so cold here in Tennessee. I prolly need to add a quart of oil so I might put a quart of Lucas in it.

Try fresh oil. You will eliminate gas fumes from any dilution caused by wear and blow by. Check this, covers the subject:

AirCare emissions testing program | Repair Info - Causes of Excess HC Emissions

What did you blow on CO? Usually, high HC will cause a CO fail as well.

Change the fuel filter .Do the Seafoam treatment through the intake . Change air filter , then change the oil and filter and install Lucas . I have seen Great results using the Seafoam . Best of luck ! The last one I seafoamed passed with flying colors , the guys could not believe it !

JWC3 I will try all of that and see what happens. My co level was a little low and on the sheet they give out all it says is to check the timing and fuel injectors and stuff nothing about oil so I will listen to you guys because I have never had any bad advice from anyone on this forum.

Low CO means the cat is working. Timing will cause high HC, the more advanced, the more HC. You should not have timing issues, but check it anyway. Smoggy might have checked it and recorded it.

Update: I changed oil to a thicker viscosity, added a qt. of Lucas and Seafoamed the intake last week, went to have my emissions tested and passed with flying colors, YAY. Thanks for all the great advice
