Rear Wiper - 2010 Expedition

I just replaced the rear wiper motor and checked the fuse (#19). I am still unable to get the rear wiper to work.... It is pretty easy to replace but it still does not work! Has anyone else experienced this?

Why did you replace the motor? Did you test to see if you were getting voltage to it when the switch was on?

The shaft that goes through the window is probably stuck. I just fixed this on my 2008 Expedition today. Sorry, no pictures. It was too cold outside and getting dark.

First, remove the entire rear wiper arm. Lift up the rear arm nut cover and remove the nut. Pulling the wiper off may be difficult. You may need to pry up on the right side with a slim flat screwdriver wile pulling up on the arm itself from the left.

Then pry up the round plastic base to expose the large nut. But before removing that large nut, first pry out the C- or E clip and remove the flat washer and o-ring and set aside so you don't loose them.

Here you may be able to force the pivot shaft through to the inside. If it won't budge with a light tapping with a hammer, better go ahead and remove the entire latch and wiper bracket to avoid breaking the rear window. To do this, first mark the position of the inside nuts/washers then remove the large nut remaining on the outside and remove the 2 nuts on the inside of the window and take the assembly to the bench. Here you can use more force to tap the pivot shaft through the assembly. Use some penetrating oil helps. Don't lose the flat washer and spring washer on the inside portion of the pivot shaft.

Once the shaft is out, clean the inside of the tube and clean the shaft. I used a green scotch brite pad on the shaft and light force with small screwdrivers on the inside of the tube o scrape out the crud. I used some WD-40 to help get the crud out. you have it clean enough when you can re-insert the pivot shaft into the pivot tube (with a little help of WD-40).

You should notice (at least on the 2008, that the tube has two copper or brass bushings that the shaft rides on. I added white lithium grease from a tube into the pivot tube, especially near the center of the tube. Also added a light coating to the pivot shaft. Then re-assemble. Use a new o-ring if the old one was broken. Then the outer flat washer and C-clip. Make sure the pivot shaft still turns.

Replace the pivot shaft and glass latch assembly on the rear window the way it came apart and loosely snug down the two inside nuts. Make sure the glass latches then thread the large outside nut down over the glass handle and tighten down the inside nuts. Replace the plastic cap that goes over the large outer nut and then the wiper arm and tighten down the wiper arm nut.

Test again and you are done.

mot250 where can a replacement O ring be found for the 2008 Expy rear wiper? Need to do this soon, but would be nice to have O ring ahead of time.

I got the wiper off no problem and took everything off the window. My problem is I can't get pivot shaft out of the pivot tube. It is frozen up good. I sprayed it good with PB Blaster and am letting it sit overnight to see if it will free up. I also tapped it with a hammer but it does not want to budge. I didn't hit it too hard because I don't want to damage it.

Unfortunately you don't have much of a choice but to use brute force.

Well hoping the PB blaster can do its work today till I get home and attack it. I can see the O ring, assuming it can be obtained at Ford dealer if needed.

Well no amount of brute force could loosen it. The whole unit broke in half on my bench before the tube budged. I ordered a new one for $48 shipped along with some rear glass strut supports for $24 shipped from Amazon prime. Old struts were badly rusted. The reinstall went very well and the wiper now works perfectly and the glass closes and latches. My only concern is that I could not find torque specs anywhere on the bolts for the rear hatch latch/wiper pivot shaft so I just tightened them pretty good without going crazy so as not to break the glass as that would be bad. The only nut that was on real tight was the big 22 mm nut on the outside of the latch handle. I tried to tighten it back up pretty tight, but again I was scared to tighten it too much so not to break the glass. Also I did not take the new part apart to re-lubricate as it seemed pretty well lubricated from the factory. Hope that doesn't end up being an issue later. Seems you should take the thing apart every few years to clean and lubricate to keep it from seizing up like it did because it is such an incredibly poor design. Thanks for all the replies and help with this.
