I THINK the rod is finely splined and the **** is pressed on. Are you wanting to install a custom ****/handle? If so you may need to remove the lever from the vehicle and carefully grind the end down to the appropriate diameter for threading to your desired size. If removal of the **** remains a problem, heat it and the lever with a dryer or heat gun (be careful with a heat gun) and it should soften and slide off fairly easily.

Just make an adaptor to slip over the splines and a threaded end to match the shift ****. I did that on my old 1989 F150.
