What color are you going to paint your gas tank(s)?

I tried doing this and the ring dosent seem to move down at all. It's tight against the shifter base.


Hi kburton66, I've been thinking about that and don't know what color to paint the tank. Yes, there's only one I'd like to have two and since I need another bed I could find one with two fuel doors. I think the bare metal paint I have would look good with the straps black maybe. But I also don't want it to look to crazy under there with to much of the gray. Once the motor and transmission are in ill see how it looks and decide.

 

Definitely subscribing to this. My dad rebuilt his '85 frame up around 1993 and we are planning on doing it again soon since road salt ate it and after parking it for 7 years, the New York weather tools its toll. Still runs great and moves perfectly though. We've been slowing stocking up on parts. Scored an entire southern front clip, every piece down to nut and bolt for $250 about a year and a half ago.

Keep me updated man, it looks awesome. Glad to see someone taking interest in the '80s Fords. My favorite body style truck ever.

 

Welcome! This truck is on my mind ALL the time and can't wait to drive it! Around here there is not to many of the 80-86 fords, everyone is Chevy crazy. So I can't wait to show it off!

 

The thing you have to push down and turn is the piece inside the ring. I had to pad it with a rag, but gloves might work, as it is a hard push and not finger-friendly.

Great thread! Subbed. I've only done one frame off resto - a 1958 VW beetle.
It was a lot simpler than this. I don't think I'd want to do what you're doing but I can live vicariously through your work!

Totally feel you there man. I do see a lot of '80s trucks which is nice though but yeah the Chevy craze is insane lol.

 

I haven't tried to take the shifter off of the cover but, I've been replacing all the gaskets on the transmission and getting it painted up along with some other pieces.

I need to figure out how I'm going to locate the holes for the cab mounts. Anyone know what size the holes are on the rear cab crossmember for the mounts?

Kinda hurts, doesn't it? Amazing how stiff they made it.

 

OK, I should have checked to make sure the input shaft still turned before I painted the tranny. If it's in neutral the shaft should spin, no? I'm 90% sure it turned before I took it apart.

 

In neutral the input shaft should spin and the output shaft shouldn't.

 

The input shaft is not spinning but the output shaft is. Any idea on how to correct this?
