I noticed on the inside of my rear left tire there was oil on my rim. I took it to a garage and they said my seals are junk and my wheel bearings on both sides are bad. They want $1200 to do both sides. No way. I did the ball joints that wasnt bad. I wanna do it myself but im not sure what parts I need. Its a 05 f250. Any help would great.

 

It isn't bad at all. I'd rather do that than ball joints.

The way the mechanic was explaining, he made it seems like a hard job to do. The link says rear hub seals are there inner and outer seals or just one seal on each side.

 

It's not a bad job to do. You will need a special socket to remove and install the axle nuts. Other than that, it is pretty straight forward.

 

There is just the inner seals. The outer is sealed by an o-ring on the axle shaft.

I would be willing to bet that you are going to need parking brake backing plates when you get it apart. Dorman makes the backing plate. You will also need to order new parking brakes shoes and hardware since yours are going to be soaked in oil.

 

They're parking brakes...spray them off with brake cleaner and reinstall. You're not using them to slow the truck, they will be fine. Unless the are visually worn out, I would just leave them be.

Also make sure you drive your new seal straight and don't hammer the edges. Once it's in the hub it's over, so make sure the new bearings are in the hub first if you decide to replace them. Otherwise it's back to the store for another seal...doh!

It's also easier to adjust the parking brakes with the wheels off IMO before you drop it back down.

 

The parking brake shoes are not expensive. The parking brake on these trucks isn't stellar to begin so it is silly to put the oil soaked shoes back in even if you did spray them off with brake cleaner.
