477 Timing Gear Set

I am looking for a Timing gear set for a 76 F880 with a 475/477... So far I have found a listing for NAPA but they indicate none in stock and will have to wait for manufacturer... Piston Ring says they have the Crank Gear... Anyone knows of a good supplier that ships to Canada?

Still tearing apart the front on the engine to check on what parts are needed.. Still have the Harmonic Balancer and Timing Cover to pull.

It was running and died when it hit a bump and was towed Home... Crank turns, but Distributor and CAM are not...

Hmm, I see that Napa listed the timing gear set also compatible with Ranchero 6.6 L 400 CID V8, Did the Ranchero use a 401ci SD engine? Any Chance of adapting the Timing chain set from that engine to work on the 477 (Adding 2 more bolt holes to the cam gear)... Not related at all.

Do you have this thing apart yet? I think the SD motors are gear drive cams, no chain.

Yep, it is apart. Cam timing gear has a couple broken teeth, it sheared two bolts on the cam and the center pin on the cam. The crank gear is fairly worn and flattened...

Was it a chain or gear drive?

So the cam is damaged also?

Have you pulled to rocker covers? If so, see anything interesting?

As you are finding, these are antiques and not the kind that are going to finance your retirement.

Depending on a lot of other things, this may be the time to repower or upgrade the truck. Thousands into a rebuild of this motor.....only you can answer that.

A big A ouch. You say you can get a crank gear so I'd get it. Next the cam gear
couple broken teeth, thats no problem, going to need a new dowel pin. OK next
My concern would be trying to turn the camshaft by hand. In order for that kind of damage, something bad happened like swallowing a valve and a busted oil pump most likely would break the oil drive shaft. Or take off the valve covers
& look for bent pushrods or something. Think of people with "stuck or froze up
engines" which is always in these forums.. All it takes is just one stuck valve and you aint turning it over unless you break something! In your case I strongly beleive this is what happened. It takes tremendous force to wipe out teeth.
As far as the cam gear, for our shop, thats a common operation. We simply machine tooth implants & when done, you cant even see the repair. And yes its done old school with a shaper, mainly its expensive mill tooling to buy for a one off job in order to use a milling machine and that gets added to the customer so a shaper is indeed cheaper. Depending on damage, its only a $50 Job for implants "way cheaper than a dentist" !!

Pulled valve covers nothing obvious, Guess I'll see when I get around to extracting bolts from the cam and try turning it and then check the oil pump with a hex shaft down the dist

Big job, how can you replace and remachine gear teeth for $50?

Aren't these gears helical cut, and of involute tooth form...?
