striker bolt removal / door panel rattle

Hey All -

First time poster here. Got a '93 EB 302 115k owned since new, having to do some things to. Couple questions:

Striker bolts - looks like they just twist out with torx T50, but my question is, is the inside connector welded into the backside of the door jam, or loose? (when bolt finally comes out, nut falls down and out of site, or stays in place?) Same question/answer for tailgate strikers.(?)

Door panels - I took both off the same day without aid of manual, and ended up breaking off the little tab in the center that holds it snug. Now both rattle like crazy, and is driving me insane. Anyone else make this mistake, and how have you dealt w/it? Can't find replacement panels for '93 EB at any price, not that I would pay $400 anyway.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Best -

striker bolt removal / door panel rattle

The door and tailgate strikers can be removed, and the insert will stay in place. It is a little loose for adjustment, but won't fall down out of sight!
As for the door panels rattling, I have the same problem. Thought about a small dab of epoxy cement to hold them to the door. Just enough to hold the middle of the panel so it won't rattle.

Lightbulb striker bolt removal / door panel rattle

My '88 had the same issue. I took some heat/sound insulation material and covered the mounting side of the panel in some stategic places. My idea was to have the insulation material stick out just a little futher than the surfaces that actually make contact around the nylon push in trim retainers and the door itself (I don't know the official name for those retainers). About an 1/8" to a 1/4" seemed to work well and didn't make the panel bulge out from trying to compress the insulation. The insulation added just enough resistance to keep the door panel from vibrating and causing the rattle. Also it has cut down on some of the road noise. It was a cheap fix and I'm putting this behind each large trim panel as I have reason to remove them while working on this vehicle.

Great news, thanks. That's what I'd hoped for and expected, but ya never know, right? And if it *didn't* work that way, well, it'd be a pain.

Cool. I hadn't thought of that. Did you use the regular strips/rolls of unsulation like you'd ***** around windows in the house, or some kind of sheet insulation? I'm thinking now that maybe just the 1"wide X 1/8" thick stuff I already have just might work. I was also considering that sticky, black, stuff I find in the guts of every car/truck I've ever seen. (butyl adheisive or something like that) But it's so dang nasty, I'd rather not.

Hey, guys, thanks! You've given me a good excuse to spend some time in the garage this weekend.

Next time, look it up here or in a Haynes manual before you break something.

Make sure that the nylon bushing is still on the striher bolt. If its gone you can get replacements at just about any auto parts store. You can adjust the door without them, but it wont be right.

Yes, tailgate strikers have the bushings too. Slightly shorter than the door bushings though. I had a couple extra door bushings and dremeled them off to the right length - works great. I got the door and tailgate strikers/bushings replaced and adjusted, along with new tailgate cables installed last night in about an hour. Makes a world of difference, and figured out a lot of the rattle I heard coming from the pass. side wasn't the panel, but the door hinge.

Thanks again for the tips and info, and thanks especially for the online manual site. I had no idea it was available.

What exactly would I be looking forward to see if I still have these bushings or not? Are they fairly obvious?

The nylon bushing will actually wrap all the way around the metal striker bolt. If you don't see any plastic-looking stuff, your bushing is gone.

With heat and age, they get dry, crack, and fall off.

striker bolt removal / door panel rattle

Guess I have to correct my previous post on the door strikers!!! When I removed them from my 88 parts Bronco, the retainer/nut stayed in place. When I unbolted the pass.-side striker today on my 84 Bronco, the retainer fell down!!!

I had to loosen and pull back the rear inner panel, and retrieve the retainer from the bottom of the door! The good news is that there's a hole about striker-level just big enough to get a pair of pliers thru, and fasten the new striker while holding the retainer.

I got new strikers from an aftermarket supplier, for a 78-79 Bronco, with the plastic bushings. The ones listed for 80-86 have a metal clip over the bushing, but mine are the older style. GO figure???

Yeah, that's exactly what prompted my original post. Happened to me in another life on a '73 Peterbilt. Large backing nut fell into an unaccessable inside pocket. Got the panel off to get another nut on the striker, but the lost nut rattled like a SOB from then on.

My nuts, so to speak, stayed where they were supposed to stay, and I fugure most Bronco would. Have you had body work on that door?
