I'm thinking of trading my 2008 Tundra 5.7 in on a 6.2 F250.I'm pulling a 5th wheel RV at 10,000 pounds dry.And yes with no problems even going over 10,000 foot passes in Colorado.I live in the Dallas area and we went to Yellowstone in it last summer.I know some of you will be mouthing off about this set up but I'll just ignore those remarks.I've had this setup for 3 years now with several trips to the Rockies so I know it works.I'm not falling for the hype and marketing of needing a diesel.I have beefed up rear springs and upgraded tires on the Tundra.My dilemma is the 5.7 Tundra has 381 hp/401 lbs. torque rated to pull 10,600.The 6.2 F250 has 385 hp/405 lbs. torque rated to pull 12,500 both have 6 speed auto trannys.I don't see how I'm going to feel any difference in the real world.Could I be wrong.So please give me some intelligent responses....Thanks

 

well...

F250:

-Better brakes
-stronger transmission and drive line
-stronger axle
-stronger frame
-yes, it will "pull" the same, I'm guessing since my Nissan Titan felt just as strong pulling the TT as my 6.2.
-The F250 stops the Trailer much better, of course my TT brakes needed some work, which I just completed.

I would get the 4.3 rear if I was pulling that weight.

If you put 4.30 gears in it the rating goes over 15K depending on the configuration. You will also notice a big difference between a 1/2 ton Tundra and a F250 SD truck, it's just a heavier truck all the was around.

Thanks guys for the input.OK I just got back from my local Ford dealer here in Ennis,TX.He couldn't find a F250 with a 4.30 rear end and the options I want.Well mostly without the ones I don't need.So he checked about ordering one.But you can only order 2014's now and he has no way of knowing what kind of rebates and discounts will be available.He said they will be coming out in about 2 weeks or so.So we'll see then.......

 

A f250 will weigh about 2000lbs more than your Toyota. Don't expect the F250 to be a rocket. That weight is nice to have when you are towing something heavy, a heavy truck just feels better, it's hard to describe until you experience it.

 

The extra 2000lbs absolutely makes a huge difference during bad weather. I got my 250 after having had a 1500 Silverado for 15 yrs. Last month I pulled my TT through 30-40mph winds, hail, and rain so heavy I couldn't see more than 100ft in front of me and she felt very stable. If I had done that with my Chevy I would have left grip marks in the steering wheel.

Simply put, Super Duties are made to tow.

I got to compare my F250 against my Dad's Expedition , Tahoe , F150 and Chevy 1500 he had over the years , pulling the identical load.
The 250 just made the load disappear compared to the others , not even considering the 7.3L diesel it had. The road manners and stability is what made the difference and built your confidence.

I loved that truck , am researching its replacement right now.

 

I pray all had a safe and fun Independence Day.Everybody was over at the house yesterday so I picked my brother in law's brain about towing.He is a rancher and has several diesel and gas trucks.He hauls horses and cattle all over the this part of the country.I failed to mention I have a small motorcycle trailer to haul my Harley that I hitch to the back of the 5ver.At most another 1200 lbs.So I'm looking at around 12,000.The stated towing capacity of the F250 is 12,700.So he said he would not hesitate in getting the F250 even with 3.73's.Just let the tranny make up the difference in towing advantage of the 4.30 rear end.What I have read the transmissions on these things are rock solid.I'm sure some will think about me loosing gas mileage.But I'm only getting 6.9 mpg in the Tundra now.But really is that a major issue with anybody.If it was I'd not be doing this kind of stuff and move to California and drive a Prius.So I'm thinking this is what I'm going to do.

 

Thats a great point....I came out of a 2006 GMC 1500 AWD Sierra Denali it was a great truck it had tons of power lots of low end grunt for pulling. I dont tow heavy either of my cars and trailer are not more than 8k fully loaded. The Denali pulled it no sweat but when I got my '12 CC 4x4 F-250 I noticed a huge difference in the way it felt.

The bigger heavier truck makes such a difference, its not about the power output its about the bigger chassis, brakes, suspension.

My Brother in law is looking at a new 2014 GMC I think he said the new 6.2 is supposed to have 420hp and 450tq and tow 12,500.....I tired to explain to him that a 1/2 ton truck will not handle a heavy load as good as a 3/4 ton truck even if it has more power....that's why they make 1/2 3/4 and 1 ton trucks.

 

Well,leghorn... Interesting how you started your initial post. You obviously knew the consensus before you asked.
While not trying to be a smart a$$, I'll tell you that you need to read AND understand what you read. You are obviously pulling well beyond your existing truck limits, and I suspect you will be over your limits on the F250 as well, after reading this thread. You reference max limits that only apply to an empty truck, only the driver, no added payload, including nothing in the bed, cab, or console. Will a Honda Pilot pull a 6000 pound trailer? You betcha, but not safely.

The F250 will undoubtedly pull your load, and will do it much more safely than your Tundra. Do yourself a favor and spend $600 more and get the F350. You get substantially more payload, and a truck designed for added weight. Towing travel trailers or fivers is not about bragging rights, like skid pulling. As said, you won't win any races, but the heavier duty platform will excellent in all areas. Do it and don't look back. I am a diesel fanatic, and for my 10k rig, I'm looking at the 6.2L, as well. I'm done with the emissions junk, and my diesel tweaking days are all but entirely snuffed out since Uncle Sam rained on the parade. Good luck to you! You are heading in the right direction.

 

Well it's a done deal.I traded for the F250 yesterday.Got a great deal at Grand Prairie Ford right outside of Dallas.I can feel the difference.Doesn't handle as good as the Tundra but I feels so much more solid.Get my hitch installed this week.Maybe the F350 would be better.But an F450 would even be better.I'm pulling at the most 12K so I think I will be fine.Half the time I'll not be taking the Harley.Mainly what scared me on the Tundra was transmission over load.The F250 will give me peace of mind on that.......Thanks all........

 

Yes smokewagun the F350 has a higher payload rating than the F250.And yes I do understand what I read.But the F250 actually has a higher 5th wheel tow rating than the F350 according to Ford's own website.

F-250/350 SRW 4x2 tow ratings 12700/12600.I'm not being a smart a$$ either.That's just the facts.I'm more concerned about towing than hauling.So I would go over the tow limits quicker in the F350.I am quiet comfortable with the F250 plus the extra money in my pocket.

Congrats on your purchase! I'm an information junkie. I don't recall seeing a Tundra owner jump to a 6.2L SuperDuty thread and am very curious to hear your experience as you rack up some miles. Keep us posted.
