My 48-56 parts book shows the front drum changes part number between 52 and 53.

I found some dimensions on the drums that show they did change starting in 1953.

The Hub register changed from 2.88" to 3.16"
The friction surface changed from 2.11" to 2.42" - This caused the overall width to change 1/4" from 2.79" to 3.04"

This means you would have to keep the newer drums with newer hubs, but it would not keep them from working on the 48 to 52 year models if you had a matched set.
