I have a problem and i was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. My 2007 ford f150 4x4 5.4 triton engine starts to flutter and stalls when its in reverse, engine is warm, and im backing up a trailer with about 5,000 lbs on it. It drives fine with or without towing. I did notice it does it with nothing behind it on occasion. Anybody know whats causing this?

sounds like either chain tensioners or cam phasers, is there a knocking sound or a rattle when you reverse?

 

I had that same issue back in 2007 with my 05 5.4L and had Jennings Anderson Ford repair it under warranty. They ended up replacing a valve in my transmission and all has been good since.
