IMHO....
considering the oil filter bypass begins "defaulting to the open position" after 90 days (regardless of mileage) and taking into consideration the study that Valvoline did (10+) years ago, showing the additives begin breaking down after 1500 miles and by 5000 there is significant degradation, even with the current base oils....I
1. Change oil filters every 90 days
2. With the extra (8 qt) capacity...I still target oil changes every 4-5K miles.
3. If you are going past that, then IMHO I would highly consider a secondary bypass filter system such as Frantz...that filters well below 10 micron (5 micron IIRR)..and being a secondary system there is not impact on warranty, oil flow or psi.

No need for any of this. The Motocraft filter does not bypass at 90 days. Modern name brand oils are capable of very good protection long past the old propaganda of 3 months/3,000 miles routine of yesteryear. So many used oil analysis results have shown most modern semi-synth and fully synthetic oils paired with a properly tuned engine not being driven in the dirt can go to 10K miles and many time above that before a change is needed.

I suggest you head over to bob the oil guy website and sift through the thousands of posts on oil longevity as well as filter test result. For 95% of car owners there is no need to change oil every 90 days unless you like to blow money.

Well Ihate to tell you this, but the filter performance specs allow for this. Also if you contact CD products (division of valvoline) they will affirm and send you their own reports on oil breakdown...which affirm everything I have posted.

Every oil and motor expert must be wrong then.

ok, lets look at this from this aspect......
Yes the mfg's say that you can go 7500 miles on an oil change but, there is a long list of criteria that goes with this...ambient air temp, engine/trans temp, driving conditions, city/hwy percentage use, etc. It has also been done in Europe for years...up to 10,000 miles (K- equivalent)....and Japan & Germany especially.....but
1. Both in Japan & Germany, smog regs typically require the engine is "replaced' about every 30,000 to 50,000 miles...there are exceptions to this, but, most of those engine are shipped & re-sold in the US.

2. We know & all agree I'm sure, that contaminants (including acids which build up as a result of moisture/condensation in internals) is what "destroys" an oils lubrication properties

3. Oil filter for automotive applications filter between 10 to 20 microns...although filters capable of less than 10 microns are used extensively in the hydraulic & ag equipment industry, in the automotive world, it restricts the oil flow too much...so they are just not made for such applications. Filters that are closer to the 20 micron spec, true, the bypass valve is much less prone to opening even slightly because it takes much more restriction to be created, whereas the 10 micron filter is much more prone. typical extended range filters are spec'd at 15-20 microns whereas the "better" filters are spec'd at 10. The down side, the 20 micron filters allow more "crud" to circulate in the engine. This is what "The Experts" base their recommendations upon.....IMHO, I would prefer to use a filter rated at 10 microns and change it out every 90 days........

4. Both the military & HD diesel industry has known about this for decades....both use what is in effect a paper towel bypass/secondary filter in all tanks & in most 18-wheelers....while there are many contributing factors to diesels engine going 300,000+ miles before requiring even a valve job, and what we know as "extended oil change" durations, it is the cleanliness of the oil that is the primary factor...both the franz & paper towel type systems filter to less than 5 micons.

Do I believe in extended oil change durations, yes, my 1965 Mustang which I built the engine in 1987 at cost of $3500 (for parts & machine work), todays value would likely be double+.....it has been 5 years since I changed oil....but, I use a 10 micron rated oem filter & use a Franz secondary/bypass filter- the oil looks cleaner than when it came out of the bottle. The Franz filter is also replaced every 1-2 months, the oem filter replaced annually. This is very similar to what the military & long haul truckers do as well.

If you seek out and find someone who has a BMW (for example) that in the US has been services under the 10,000 mile oil change interval (this started almost 8 years ago now)....by 100-120K miles, these engines (many) are junk- many requiring "valve adjustment" on non-adjustable valvetrain as early as 80k miles....many pics are posted showing the excessive wear, etc.....and the oem filters (which are typically used) are of the "better" spec....10 micron. IMHO, (and as demonstrated with CD's test), engine oil additives get's tired and although the base oil will remain good as long as it is clean, additives 9like a fresh quart of oil) is necessary to ensure proper lubrication.

I typically keep our vehicles for 15-20 years before we replace them, and I can say, following my Dad's theories that as a aerospace engine & ol saltflats racer he has employed going back to the 40's and still does to this day, it works.

It's your vehicle so change it when you like. I do not know how to answer you question and you received a thead hyjacking. Sorry I can't help. Maybe someone can answer your question and not preach to you about oil changes. Just my opinion.

100% is = to 7,500miles by default.

Per manual, page 130. Press and release RESET stem to display "Oil Life XXX%". HOLD RESET = NEW

Press and hold the RESET stem for 2 seconds and release. Oil Life is set to XX% and 'OIL LIFE SET TO XX%" is displayed.

Note: Oil Life Start Value of 100% equals 7,500miles or 6 months. For example, setting OIL LIFE START VALUE to 60% sets the OIL LIFE START VALUE to 3,000miles and 120 days.

2007 Model Year is 5000 miles, nothing changed on the engine for 2008 but the interval went up to 7500. This is what mine has been changed at under warranty, but now that I'm out of warranty if I let it slip a little past 5K, I'm not too worried since later models were extended. Toyota Back-Spec'd many of their oil change intervals from 5K to 10K if you used certain THINNER synthetic oils. Oils have changed a lot in the past 10 years. I've always run Mobil 1 5W20 in my expedition and will continue to do so. Oil changes now will be somewhere around 6K miles now. There is another active thread for resetting the oil change life, which I've done to add a little time when my %life was decreasing from lack of use (6 month max). I use my Expy on long trips mainly so when I use it, I make up for lack of use.
