I found a 1996 f350 crewcab 4x4 longbed automatic with a 460 for sale.everyone tells me to get a diesel but this truck is very nice.It has 118000 miles on it.what kind of gas mileage can i expect? i know it wont be very good

 

I have heard people tell me they get up to 15mpg with a 460 and AT but I get 10mpg all the time, hiway, in town loaded unloaded. I guess if you have tall gears and drive on the highway maybe you can get up to 15???
think about what you are going to use the truck for. The diesel costs more to do sevices on and it costs more initially, it does have more torque but the 460 is normally quicker off the line. the fuel mileage is better unloaded on a diesel but when it is loaded down the millage drops down to almost as bad as the 460. Both have there pluses.

I have a 94 F250 long bed, supercab 4x4 with 460, auto and 4.10 gears. I get almost always around 11mpg for normal freeway and around town driving. If I tow my 8,000lbs + trailer I get around 8 or 9mpg unless I am in heavy hill climbing. I have some times seen 12mpg on a good day, no trailer, wind to my back, but can only dream of 15mpg.

A 350 should get a little less mpg due to more weight, assuming all other factors are the same. Different gearing and tires will affect the mileage.

Yeah, I have also heard that while towing the diesel mileage gets down near the gas. But with no load on the freeway it is up in the high teens, around town down in the low teens. The diesel appears far more sensitive to stop and go and maybe loading than the gas. Ie gas mileage is poor almost al the time, diesel swings a lot.

I have the same truck as Jim Henderson except it has a 5-speed manual transmission. On a good day, freeway mileage is 12 mpg at 75 miles an hour. In and around town it is 9 mpg. I work in construction and have always bought trucks like this for what they do for me and just don't worry about the mileage. The 460 Ford engine is a low tech dinosaur in a digital fuel injected world, but it is also very reliable, easy to find parts for and modify. A past employee of mine has a 1987 like mine with almost 300,000 miles on the original engine. Life is short, drive what you like.

I drive a '96 F-250 supercab long bed 460 auto trans, 4.10 gear.
130,000 miles, headers and a flowmaster 3" exhaust system. Engine is in perfect shape, doesn't even use a quart of oil between oil changes up to every 5,000 miles.

Empty, I average 10 to 11 MPG, very few occasions I've gotten about 12.

Our family uses it as a work truck to haul hay and horse trailers.
I tow double-axle flatbed trailers with it with up to 8,000 pounds of animal feed on board. Awesome power, on the freeway I've towed the trailers with a lead foot for two hundred miles a day at 70-75 MPH, with the A/C on, going uphill. Under those conditions I get around 8 MPG.

It's a dinosaur of a beast, but the truck does everything we need it to do. I respect the diesels but I don't believe a PSD would be an advantage other than for better fuel economy. I can tow up to 10,000 pounds with the gooseneck, that's the limit of the truck frame, not the engine.
They want $4,000 or more for a used '96 PSD instead of a 460 and that difference pays for a lot of gas. Diesel maintenance is also much more expensive than for the gas burner.

Empty, it's not a bad stoplight racer, either. Dusted a guy's shiny new all-show-but-no-go F-150 only yesterday. Age before beauty, they say.

Check your wallet and make sure you can realistically budget and justify the cost of driving one of the things. This morning I filled up to the tune of $45, and I'll have to do it again next week. Ouch.

 

Thanks for the info.I am a gas mechanic by trade and donot really understand diesels.I have a 79 f150 4wd that gets @ 10-11 mpg so I am good friends with the local gas stations.I can justify @ 10 mpg on the f350 just making sure it wasnt going to be 5-6 mpg or less!!

 

 

add a knn daul electric fan a computer reprogramer daul exhaust 5 inch pipe headers and muffler and a intake manifold by edalbock and a bigger radiator and two tornado's since there are two parts to the air intake i did all that and i get 18.5 mpg

 

I get anywhere from 10.5 to 12.7 mpg with my 460 with a 4.10 rear end. My wife pulls off 13.0 mpg pretty consistently in the thing, but she drives very gently.

I just picked up a couple weeks ago a 1986 F250 Lariat XLT with a 460ci and a 3speed C6, and so far i have got about 15 to 16 consistently. Those are almost all highway miles but for a carbed 460 its super great, i dont know the rearend gear ratio yet but i thinks it must be 3.55 or close to for this good of mileage

 

Ha! I had to laugh when I read that. Thanks for digging this up from the grave. Nine years ago we were upset about a $45 tank full!?! I would love that today. $120+/- is killing me.

i have a 95 f350 crew cab 4x4 351 i get about 12.6 miles to the gallon about 8-9 with a ton or more as long as im easy on the gas on take off mileage stays about thesame street and highway no my friend has the crew with 460 and i do better than him he gets around 10 on a good day :P

 

if ur on the east coast their is an online auction that ends tomorrow 2600 gallons of highway diesel for 1 penny a gallon buyer must remove tank stays it has 0 bids on it also i think their is 900 gallons off road diesel u can pick up for a penny a gallon
