302 oil pump drive/distributor engagement
Can anyone tell me how much of the oil pump drive is supposed to engage the distributor? When I attempt to reseat my distro, it hits the top of the oil pump drive because the oil pump drive is not aligned in the center of the distro housing in the block. I can use a thin screwdriver to put a glob of wheel grease on the drive shaft to more or less center it, but when I slip the distro down on top, it engeges only about 1/4 to 1/2 inch into the distributor. Is that enough or has my oil pump drive shaft disengaged off the oil pump...?

It should sit down until the collar on the distro hits the top of the intake.
Push distro in until it hits the pump shaft, and then have someone bump the starter -- it will slip down that remaining 1/4" right onto the shaft. Remember -- the dizzy gear will be already engaged with the cam so this won't mess up your timing any. Good luck!

Jim, Wotan, Poison... just wanted to say thanks for the advice. After I removed the dizzy, I was a little concerned with the lateral play the oil pump drive had in the hole and I was hoping it wasn't because it somehow slipped out of the oil pump and was just hanging loose in the crankcase. I guess there is supposed to be some kind of retainer on it to keep it centered but as long as it seats that 1/4 inch or so into the distributor, I am golden. Thanks again you guys for the advice.
