I am in an unfortunate situation of needing more child car seat space than the vehicles I can comfortably afford new-ish can provide (and minivan's are also not capable of holding the young crowd I haveand am in negotiations on an 07 Expedition EL Eddie Bauer 2WD rig with 90k on it. It's a nice truck, and up here in my area, priced to move at 3k under blue book... But still at $18k. In the Seattle area the EL's are hard to find and I've yet to see an upgraded trim package so we kind of (really) want it but we haven't ever purchased a vehicle with such high mileage before and need this to be a long term vehicle (at least longer than the loan!)
Does anyone have a ballpark idea how long this baby might last me? We are purchasing the best ESP we can get on it which unfortunately won't cover the luxury auto features or the air ride suspension - which is a big concern for my hubby, and a handful of other very expensive sounding items. We like the extra room the EL provides (and my dog would really enjoy going for rides again) so would prefer this one but know we can find a lower miles regular expedition for the same price if we're making a poor move here.
Appreciate any thoughts you all can give from experience!

 

Well, mechanically a 2wd version is pretty simple. Aside from a different rear-end, I'd say you could compare it to 2007 Ford F150s for high mileage.

I don't think you'll wear it out any time soon.

 

I have a '07 4WD Limited that just turned 118k and runs great. We have several Expys at work with 150k

 

Depending on how the truck was serviced/driven, it could last 110K or it could last 200K. At some point though the trans and engine will need attention.

I just bought an 07 Navigator L with 91k on the clock. it had service records for the most part. I am totally confident that it will be good for another 50k without a problem. I did change plugs and coils simply for peace of mind, but otherwise it runs amazing. I have seen many posts of people running them anywhere between 180 and 300K. I am sure the 300K is an exception rather than the rule, but have a certified mechanic check it over before you buy it.

 

I have an 07 EL Eddie Bauer w/140,000. Everythings fine. Just bought its third set of tires.

 

My 07 just passed 378,000 miles. It was a demo that I purchased from the dealer in 07 that had around 5,000 miles when I took it home.

 

Mines is an 09 nav but i bought it at 112k, now it has 120k after 3 mnths. Runs beautifully. No problemss except for the knock in the front dash. After purchase and reviewing service records, changing out plugs first if possible then keeping up with maintenance will keep it on the road. Air suspension was a concern for me but after reading through this and other forums, it seems the third gen of air springs is extremely more reliable that the sec gens, either that or that 10yr break in pd hasnt reached yet. Idk if it will help but i wait until it pumps to drive it. I would like to change the to the mechanical springs like the newer models but ill wait until more ppl convert first. The other features are more hit and miss, either they will wrk or not, so i minimize their use. I saw one person had a navi wit over 300k highway miles with no issues, however there's ppl here who had problems b4 hitting 30k. If your good to her, she will return the favor. And speakin she has 90k, doesnt sound much like a lemon. hope this helps and good luck.

OP. This is your prime example of what a well looked after 5.4L can do. All expeditions from 2005 up have this beautiful engine and I 300k is no sweat for these engines. I'm sure semperfi can vouch for me too. My old 5.4 was at 206k miles when my brother wrecked her and she was nowhere near tapping out. It just finished a 1200 mile trip, flawlessly, the day before he wrecked her.




HOWEVER. The trans in the 07-08 are something I would stay away from.

 

If you are worried about reliability, the 98-04s and 09-14 expeditions are bullet proof. The 07-14 can return 19-22 hwy as some have reported, after mild mods. The 98-04s average at 12-15. The 05-06s did 15-18.

If you are a little more adventurous with your choices, the excursion might be something that you would be interested in. They are older, but feature diesel engines that will out live you. You will likely never need to upgrade tow vehicles for anything you wanna buy and tow in the future. And the 4x4 systems are beefy, and the brakes overqualified. The fuel mileage is actually better than an expedition with an average of 25 in some cases (with the 6.0 diesel), and the power to get out in front of traffic is better.

I used to be and expedition owner but I think the excursion will be my next SUV as I used and plan to expect more from my next SUV than the expedition could provide.

Based on one and done two years ago, a question that likely won't be answered
