Brake Pedal Issues

Is there supposed to be some sort of return spring on the brake pedal? I cant seem to get the brake lights to stop sticking on and if the pedal returned to the forward stop it would work. Im just wondering if there is supposed to be a spring or is there some sort of adjustment somewhere Im not seeing.

74 F100 Shortbed Styleside Explorer. So is the Master Cylinder supposed to push the pedal all the way back. There is probably about an inch of play in the pedal.

Are you aboulutely sure that no one has messed with the pedal-as in swapping one from anouther year/model of truck?

If so, its most likely just your brakelight switch itself or the fastener/clip

A new clip "should" come with a new switch, thats what was wrong with mine....cheap enough fix.

Did a quick search:http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/de...EPM506602.html

Thanks for the info. I actually have a 74 F100 and the switch is kind of a plunger looking switch. I put one in about 2 months ago and being its made in China the spring tention on the switch failed. So less than a week ago I put another one in and now it seems to be sticking on. If I put my foot under the pedal and pull it (the brake pedal) towards me the lights go out. I thought it might be the adjustment of the switch but Ive spent some time trying to get it adjusted right but it still seems to be giving me problems no matter how I adjust the switch. Im about to go to the Ford dealer and see what they give me for a switch and see if it might just be the lack of quality in the switchs im getting from the Auto parts store. Would it be possible for someone to take a couple of pictures of their brake switch so I can make sure im not missing something on mine? Thanks for any help.

I think theres a return spring under there it should pull the pedal back, or you could have other things wearing such as the master cylinder/power booster

wilcam47,
Dont know if it makes any difference but my truck has manual brakes. No Power assist except for the extra pressure I put on the brakes with my foot... It has Disc in front and drum in back.

Mine is the same. The switch in mine is adjusted almost all the way out.

The way the switch works is, when the pedal is at rest the plunger is pushed in by the stop which separates a set of contacts inside by pushing a center piece of plastic in between the contacts.. The contacts are separated so the circuit is open. As you push on the brake pedal the plunger extends sliding out the center piece and allows the contacts to touch, completing the circuit, brake lights go on.
There are better switches available. You just have to get your parts store to find them. Mine did.

No return spring, it's all master cylinder pressure.

Thanks for the info... Im kind of thinking about changing the master cylinder just due to the fact that it looks like its been in there forever. I know my brakes are manual and I have driven other vehicles with manual brakes but you really have to get on these to stop. It may just be a Ford thing but Brakes are one of those things I dont like to take a chance with... I cant remember what website I was on but I saw a higher dollar brake switch and I need to find it again. Thanks again.

Brake pedal has a bracket made as part of it, has a round hole in it. C8TZ-13A629-A adapter fits into the hole, then the switch threads into the adapter.

Applications: 1968/74 F100/350 / 1975/76 F150/350 300/360/390 / 1975/77 F100 / 1975/77 F150/350 460 without Speed Control / 1978 F100/350 & Bronco before serial number CC0,001.

wilcam47: There is no brake pedal return spring, N-O-N-E = NONE!

Number Dummy,
Thanks for the info.. I seem to be missing the Adapter that you discribed above in mine. Im wondering if that could cause the problems im having. Anyways thanks for the info... Also is that a Ford Part Number for that Adapter you mentioned above? I think I am going to go to my local Ford Dealer and ask if they might still have one in stock...

JRB65, I'm rebuilding my dash right now and I'll post some pictures in a little while of the pedal, adapter and switch and how to "get around" the adapter if you don't have it.
