The wife and I have an 8 week old baby girl and looking to trade in the IS250 for more hauling room (dog, baby, toys, 1,200 mile road trip to see our parents a few times a year).

We considered the new Explorer Sport (I like the thought of TT Explorer) but just not sure we care for the My Ford Touch and the "unibody" CUV/SUV design.

Forgive me if I hurt anyone's feeling but I don't care about good MPG. I own an F250 and a Terminator so clearly that's not my goal.

What I love about the Expedition is it's huge and safe. The Triton 24V V8 is proven. The interior is extremely nice, though many will say outdated (Ford hasn't changed the Expedition since 2007). I like the interior as we know how to navigate it from my 2008 F250. We are specifically considering a 2013 White Tri-Coat Limited with navigation and the works.

I realize Ford may change the 2014 design but I'm not sure we have time to wait to expand our road trip vehicle. We would likely keep the new purchase for a long time...

Anyways, give me your thoughts and experiences.

 

Sounds like you have it figured out. Watch this video and take note of the innocent people who are struck head-on by this drunk driver at the end. They're driving an exact copy of my family's Expedition. According to the news reports that I read at the time, the two people in the Expedition got out of the vehicle virtually unhurt and sat in the grass until the tow truck arrived. Sometimes the most important thing isn't MPG.

Going to look at a 2013 Limited tomorrow in white with charcoal black interior. It has the navigation, power running boards, bucket second row seats, air ride rear suspension, remote start, and the 3.73 rear end to name a few.

 

The only thing I could add is to get the EL if possible. I had an '07 EL that I traded for an '11 regular length and I'll go back to the EL if possible on my next trade. Excellent vehicles, the 5.4 is a good runner. The EL comes with 3.73 axle ratio while the regular Exp comes with the 3.31. I can't tell much difference in mileage between either axle ratio.

 

you sure you cant tough it out till the end of this year? So many rumors about the v6 and v8 you wouldn't want you to regret it

 

FWIW, I'm with Jesse -- If you are road tripping with dog (s) and kid (s) - any more on the way after this one? - then you should look at an EL for the space and longer wheel base on the highway. We recently purchased used 2010 and drove both sizes, my wife initially thought the EL would be harder to park and maneuver, but could barely tell a difference. Coming from an Excursion in the past, the turn radius us sooo much better on these that the extra length does not feel much larger but sure has more room in the back for packing up for a road trip behind the 3rd row. Unless the EX knocks you out of a garage, it was worth the trade off for us by far...

 

I would wait it out for the possible new engines and better mpg. The only thing I do not like aqbout our 07 XLT reg. is the towing torque and mpg . I think the new engines will help in both areas.

 

Pulled the trigger and we own it. Thanks for all of the comments, good or bad. They were all valid points. The 2013 is everything we want in a new family vehicle. We will have it for many years.

Just a follow up.
Pulled the bass boat, dog, cat, baby, and mother in law with luggage and got just under 12mpg from PA to OK. I'll take that all day...

Awesome! Congrats (delayed) on the purchase Im sure as heck happy with mine! The 5.4 is an amazing engine I got 20MPG with the AC pumping and a full load driving to the northeast with all that stop and go and the truck had plenty of pick up and stopping power to not make me worry or get upset at all. I have driven the 5.0 and while the coyote isnt bad, I much prefer the 5.4 and its broader power band to that of the 5.0.

 

Please tell me you are joking right, 20 mpg in stop and go traffic fully loaded? Also please tell me that your joking about plenty of pick up. The expedition is the SLOWEST full size SUV on the market, even with 3.73s mine is a dog, my 08 was a dog, the other 10 in our fleet are dogs. 16 sec quarter miles are a thing of the mid 80s.

They are nice but they need a major overhaul in the powertrain department. The 5.0 is not ideal but it would be much better than the 5.4 and the 6.2 would be great.
