Difference between ICP sensors

What is the difference between the 94-96 ICP sensor and the 97-03 sensor. The sensor on the 96 is starting to leak however I have a good sensor off of a wrecked 2001 SD. If I can use the sensor from the latter model truck I save $140 bucks.

They are the same.

The 6.0's are different.

Sorry to step on your pee-pee Talyn, but I got to disagree with you here. No they're not the same. They are different parts. How, I don't know, but there are two different part number for pre '97 and post '97. They're shaped different too. I put a post '97 one in my truck and it ran, but it acted a little strange. I don't know what the functional differences are, and for all I know they may be interchangeable, but they are certainly NOT the same.

Two different part numbers too.
Riffraff Diesel Performance Parts | Ford 7.3 diesel | 7.3 powerstroke | Ford Powerstroke | 7.3L Powerstroke Parts

For what it is worth Riffraff used the same picture for both part numbers, but the shape of that sensor is the later sensor. The early sensor is round at the top and has a smaller hex section underneath.

I hope some one can shine some light on this. What do you mean it acted strange?

It ran okay, but it ran different than it does with the "older" one. It idled a little rough and wasn't as smooth.

Go ahead and use the 2001 sensor.....The older one uses goldish terminals and the 97 and up used a silverish terminals inside the sensor....they are interchangeable... just avoid the 2 piece ones and non OEM....

So then, are they interchangeable? I'm just curious because I have several and they're not all the same type. I guess I should compare the resistance of them side by side and see if they read the same or not.

Now that I think of it, if the operating resistance of the sensors wasn't the same you couldn't cross over the PCMs between the years either (which you can). They must have just changed the design. I wonder why Ford still offers both sensors then.

It's a pressure sensor.

I'm sure they made adjustments too it.
But all it does is read oil pressure.

The 6.0 sensor is the same way, but it has different threads on it.

I was not aware that you could use a latter powerstroke PCM on the older trucks. I know that the 100V and 120V IDM's can be swaped.

You can't use the SD (99 up) PCM on the OBS (94.5-97) trucks but the PCMs between different years of OBS trucks can be interchanged as long as you keep the transmission the same between the trucks. That being said the later PCM's had a little better base program in them.

Better check your color vision. I have a 97+ sensor (F6TZ-9F838-A,/14-022 Diesel O-Ring) with gold terminals?

Talking about ICP choices going forward... Over on the SD sub-forum we seemed to have noticed a bad run of ICP's coming from OEM suppliers a few months ago. Similar to the Alliant UVCH (1999 - 2003) that are now on backorder because Alliant themselves said there was a "problem with their manufacturer and quality control" and all supplies have been pulled back.

Anyway, an FTE'r ( @FordTruckNoob ) identified an alternative to the Motorcraft/International ICP as one made by Honeywell.

The longevity, life expectancy and feasibility of the Honeywell ICP is still in question though. I have linked it and provided it here simply as an alternative to OEM as these engines get a little older each day. There may be a day when we need to source reputable sensors from non-OEM sources due to lack of production or poor quality control practices by the manufacturers.

In addition, some information on counterfeit Motorcraft parts/sensors is below.

Good luck out there!
