R assembly plant code was originally assigned to the Richmond CA plant. New San Jose plant replaced it in 1956, as Richmond was deemed too small.
Irony: The Richmond plant is there today, recently restored and rented out for mixed usage. Huell Howser's PBS TV show "California's Gold" did a segment on it.
