Ok, I want to get rid of the behind the seat fuel tank in my 59 f100 as i'm tired of smelling the gas and I want to have that little extra room for my long legs and bigger belly. I want your advice/opinions and expertise on how to go about mounting another fuel tank. I have a couple of side tanks from various year f150s and 250s. I also have a friend who said he can fabricate one to fit within the frame just under the bed and would hold upwards of 50 gallons of fuel.

So anyone who has done this please chime in as I need the advice and knowledge.

There are pictures in my gallery. I used a 1969 mustang tank. My fill tube is located behind the license plate.

 

I put a Rodeo 22 gal tank behind the rear axle between the frame rails, with the filler through the rear quarter panel.

50 gallons of fuel takes a considerable amount of space.

I believe that simply removing the tank, in and of itself, will not give much if any additional room to adjust a stock seat backwards. You would, I believe, have to either change seats, or relocate the mounting holes or rails. Even then, the stock seat would need to be adjusted to almost straight up, or perpendicular to gain much. The greatest gain would come from using a different steering column to move the wheel closer to the dash.

You could always remove a six inch section of your femurs, and notch the steering wheel to accommodate your belly, might be cheaper.LOL!

 

i have been trying to figure out a way to remove the six inches of extra gut...seems that most conventional fabrications require some sort of medical background LMAO!!

Mtdorf, I am 5'9". Our era trucks are admittedly short on legroom. With my seat all the way back, which I need to do also, the top of the backrest is touching the rear of the cab, so it cannot go back any further, no matter if the tank is there or not. Perhaps if I moved the stops in, I could gain an inch and a half, but my seat would be uncomfortably upright. Perhaps different seat may gain you something, but I do not know.

By the way, my stomach has never been described s minuscule, either.

switch over to a 57-60 panel bodied truck then you will have upwards of 6 feet to move the seat back (heh heh)

My wife says i just need to fabricate an extra cab, that way i'll fit and all my toys can go with me on my trips...she is tired of holding the rifles when we travel!!
