Hey y'all does anyone know if a 240 will fit up to the factory 3 on the tree bellhousing? If not then will the t98 bellhousing and trans fit in the truck without (much) work? We found out the cylinder heads for the 292 are cracked. We might get replacements later on down the line but for now we are just looking to get the truck driving again.
If you use a 240, nothing from the 292 will bolt up. You'll need the 240 bellhousing, same as small block v8 from 65 up, you'll have to make mounts and add a trans crosmember, different driveshaft but it can be done.
Find a 300 with a trans on it, 3, 4 or 5er. The trans to bell pattern changed somewhere in there to a rectangular or "butterfly" pattern from the old "square" pattern that your T98 has.
I already have a 240 with a bellhousing and 4spd out of my '66 rust bucket and that engine runs, so we might just fab up some mounts and use that til we get the y-block rebuilt.
Nothing wrong with using what you have, that's the true spirit of hot rodding. What are you planning to do for clutch linkage? Modify the original slave cylinder to actuate the clutch?
With all the things that will need to be changed and then change again for the Yblock can't you just wait to instal the Yblock or do you need to have it on the road now?
Honestly my pops and younger brother are the owners of the truck so its really up to them, I'm just looking to gather some information for them. And I'm not really sure about the clutch linkage, any tips if we do decide to put in the six?
Well thanks for the help guys I guess we'll just keep the six for a later project or something. Like I said I have no real opinion on what to do with this truck I'm just trying to gather information and it looks like it wouldn't be the best idea.
