'08 factory nav upgrade

Hey everybody, I've got a 2008 EL Limited, that did not come with the factory navigation. I've found them for sale on ebay, and am thinking about putting one in. Anybody have any pointers? I'd really like to put in an OEM unit, just for the sake of keeping it all factory. I know there are probably advantages to putting in an OE unit from a newer model year, so I'm open to that as well (SYNC, no nav CD, etc.) I've got several questions though, like...

GPS antenna - how hard to install, and any chance it might already be there?

SYNC - can I get it on this model? (the rear view mirror has a mic in it already)

Rear seat DVD - how will controls work with a factory nav if there wasn't one previously?

Rear view camera - will it work with the new screen or stay in the rear view mirror?

Steering wheel controls - will they still work?

Any other things to look out for or think about would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

SYNC - can I get it on this model? (the rear view mirror has a mic in it already) SYNC can not be added on the 07-08 models (as far as I have read/researched ) Also, are you sure the rear view has a mic in it already (it's integrated into the top of the mirror not the bottom ) and is the wiring functional ? The factory NAV can be voice controlled.

Rear seat DVD - how will controls work with a factory nav if there wasn't one previously? If programmed properly it will control the RSE unit, does your current radio control the RSE unit now?

Rear view camera - will it work with the new screen or stay in the rear view mirror? Stay in rear view mirror, the Pioneer based units do not have the ability to show video ( *** Unless using LockPick***)

Steering wheel controls - will they still work? Yes, but the factory NAV units had a "voice" button on the steering wheel controls and I'm not sure if the wiring would be there to just swap out the switches

If you're gonna do it I would suggest just getting the Pioneer based factory unit ( Non Hard Drive / Non SYNC )
I have looked into swapping out the Pioneer NAV that came factory in my 08 Limited for the newer style but no one could guarantee that it would work. It would be an expensive test I'm not willing to make. The controls on the steering wheel are different on the SYNC based units also, no more fan and temp controls.

Matt,

thanks for the reply. That makes sense - I didn't really have my heart set on SYNC anyway, and I'd like to make it as seamless as possible. I guess I did not realize the factory nav is a Pioneer unit. Since it is non-hard drive, does it have two CD slots - one for the maps CD and one for actual CD's?

Thanks

Yup two slots. For the 6 CD's they are accessible from the radio face but the NAV DVD you have to open the radio face. Keep in mind the NAV DVD stays in the radio all the time, so you never really have to access it once installed.

These are pics from my 06 F150 I added the factory NAV to. (since sold the truck )

Top slot is for CD's
