223/240 swap

Hello forum, hey, can I swap a 223 in place of my 240 which is bolted to a 4 spd T-98? The 223 is a 61 year, and the 240 is a 66 year. Merry Christmas to all

If I needed to replace a worn out 240, I would seriously consider a 300 cu in six. I think it's a direct replacement and there always seems to be one or two on CL. Not sure about the 223 being a bolt up. I guess it's just me, but I've always wanted a 300 six. My first truck ever was a 65 f 100 I bought in 1971 with a 240. I thought I was the king of the world!....

As Gary said, a 300 would go in there easier. A 223 would take a few extra parts but if you already have all you need, throw it in there. i am a big fan of the 223!

If you have a 240, why not get a 300 to build with the 240 head? My understanding is that gives you a higher compression ratio on a budget. That and some 1.6 rockers for the mild cam effect and it's an engine that goes good and will last a long time. Keep in mind this is just what I've gleaned from the interwebz

No. This is not a bolt-in swap. The 223 has a different bell to block pattern. The T98 uses the old "square" trans to bell pattern. The 223 has the intake/exhaust on the driver side. The 240/300 has it on the passenger side.

Motor mounts may be different as well. I'm not sure, but it is possible the 223 uses a front mount and the side mounts are off the bell. You can check that easily enough. The 240/300 uses side mounts.

IF you want to swap, go with the 300 and a Mazda or ZF 5 speed. (serving suggestion)

Col. Flashman has a 300 in an older truck, if you are still interested in the project, he can be looked up and consulted. This isn't that big a change, but it's not quick turn of the wrench.

Thanks to all for the info, I just finished my 66, had it ready to drive in our local C-mas parade, and the week of the parade the crank spun a bearing. I have this complete 223 in the garage, just was hoping it would fit in for the winter- The 300 idea sounds like the way to go, Happy holidays to all

FTE member Col Flashman swapped a 300 I-6 into his 1958 Mercury M100 that originally had a 223. Suggest you contact him for details.

He also swapped in Toyota P/S.
