6.0 Oil Cooler Replacement

6.0 Oil Cooler Replacement
Hey guys, I need a replacement truck (can't afford new) and am looking at a 6.0 Ford.
I hear a lot about replacing the oil cooler either with a new OEM or and complete after market change.
It seems like a critical item.
Have many of you 6.0 owners made this change?
How critical is it?
Thanks for help.

Most people do and EGR delete or upgrade and are already that far into the engine so it is a good idea to replace the oil cooler at that time or vise versa. I had bought my 05 with 56k and not even having it for a month I had done a delete and new oil cooler just cuz i didnt want any problems in the near future. Did it myself with basic tools, took 2 full days taking my time making sure i didnt f**k anything up.

I, on the other hand, bought an '05 with 60K miles and my temps are perfect. I am adding a coolant filter soon, and don't plan any work on EGR or oil coolers in the foreseeable future. It all depends on the truck, and what the temps are. You can easily buy a Scangauge, program it and take your target truck for a drive with it plugged in.
I'd be more worried about fuel pressure, personally. I have a definite bee in my bonnet about low fuel pressure. Search blue spring...

Ive had my 04 since 92k for 3yrs now at 125k. Had sgII for about a year and deltas rose to 50*! So i made the change to new oilcooler and deleted egr system. Exhaust sounds amazing when you do. The SGII definitly saved my trucks life tho. Again just a week ago it picked up low FICM volts. So i got that upgraded before i blew injectors. SGII is a must when considering this truck.
But yes, the main weak spots on the 6.0l are the Oil Coolers, EGR systems, Head Gaskets and Turbos. But they will last the life of the truck if maintained well.

Preventive maintenance is a must on these beast. I bought a scangauge, flushed the crap out of it, installed a coolant filter and switch to ELC Cat 1 coolant and I monitor ECT / EOT Delta. I would not change a good oil cooler, mine is around 3 to 6 normal, and 7 to 10 towing.
For turbo, I cycle the VGT at least every week from high to low, it cycles the vane on the unisson ring and help reduce carbon and rust buildup. You floor the pedal, let the turbo go to it's max and let go the pedal, you should see you VGT cycle from the fifhtee's down to 14, if it does'nt, try again, sometimes it takes a few shots to go down to 14.
May be someone has other suggestions to cycle the turbo but it's been working for me. Before taking apart and cleaning the turbo and backflushing the oil cooler, I used to get a CEL just about every time the truck was working a bit hard. IT's been around 15,000 miles now with no light and no problem at all with this engine, I cross my finger.

To give you an idea of what's involved, here's a write up of a Bulletproof Diesel oil cooler install (pic heavy). If you're going back OEM, you can skip the BPD specific stuff.
As mentioned, there really isn't a need to replace the oil cooler unless you're seeing more than a 15* difference between ECT and EOT when driving 60-65 mph on flat ground (no trailer).
