70 F100 steering column

My trucks steering column is way too long. When I sit in the seat I would like it to be further away. There stearing wheel is way too close for me. Is there a way to shorten it? Can this even be done?

Look under the dash where it bolts on, the holes are slotted and you might gain a little there. Surgery to shorten the whole thing shouldn't be rocket science. Take it all apart and take the tube and shaft to a good machine shop or welder and tell them how much you want out.

Im with you on the steering column being too long.

For now you can always get a smaller diameter steering wheel, which will give a lil extra space

I may either swap out the column or cut it down to a shorter length

I'm with ya on the steering wheel being up in your face - I bought my 71 ranger XLT last month, and noticed that.

As fate would have it, my steering column (shifter) broke, and I'm installing a new column. I found one locally for $40 which is a steal. I'm guessing it will be the same as the old one - a bit too long.

What I really wanna do (down the road) is install a 78/79 Ford Truck/Bronco Tilt Steering Column. They will bolt in with only a few tweaks from what I've read. They have them regularly on EBay for $100 - $150. If I had the money, that's what I'd do.

Good luck, and Happy Holidays!

That's one mod I've never done but read up on it some. I don't think it's too hard, just the wiring to sort out. I could point you to some good info on "that other" site but a few guys here seem to get testy when we do that.
