The brake vacuum booster located on the firewall connects to the carburetor via a hose and to a cylinder located below the passenger side; from this cylinder another hose comes out and is not connected to anything.
There are two brackets (bottom image) attached to the frame on the driver side just behind the master cylinder, and according to the illustration on page 18 of the 1948 – 1956 Ford Truck Parts and Accessories Illustration Catalog, these brackets seem to be to attach the brake booster. The illustration on page 17 seems to be more in accordance to what I have.
I am not sure what is going on here, but I suspect that there is a mixture of various models. I would like to know if I can do away with that awful looking thing on the firewall.

 

What year and model do you have? Some 48-52 F5s and all F6s had a brake booster under and just behind the drivers seat. The thing mounted to the firewall is not a brake booster, but a check valve.

You should list what year/series truck you have in your "About Me" profile. All that's listed there now is 1949 F1 through F8.

You should also type it as a signature and when asking questions, mention all the pertinent details.

Remote mounted brake booster is known as a Hydro-Vac.

 

Thanks for the clarification. I am still confused as to why I dont have a booster. The hose coming from the valve goes to this cilynder which I dont know what it is. I beleive the truck is a 1949 F6, but not 100% sure about this because it looks like previous owners installed parts from other models.

 

Page XIII on the catalog I have starts with the year 1951. I have managed to identify the mdel as a TH, but not 100% sure. For example the diagram on page 17 does not show a check valve or a brake booster. The photos I took clearly show two brackets where probably at some point in time there was a brake booster. Maybe now you can see the absolute confusion i have regarding the issue of identifing the model.
Please excuse my lack of knowledge; but what do you mean by type as a signature?
I still dont know what is that cylinder looking thing under the pasangers side. I am lookinf forward to having some level 101 help regarding the brake booster issue.

 

I think he means to include they type of vehicle you have in your signature line. It shows up at the bottom of all your posts.

Mine is the "Powered by Flathead V8" Bumper sticker. His is "2013 Escape SE FWD 2.0L Ecoboost, Sync, My Ford and etc"

This way everyone would know what kind of vehicle you are asking questions about.

Ok, if this is the case, what is the purpose of an accumulator? The check valve connects to the carburetor and to the cylinder. Still not sure if I need to install the check valve once I assemble the truck.

 

As I understand it the check valve helps maintain the health of the vacuum system. You don't want fuel fumes to start eating away at your seals and diaphragms! If you plan on using any vacuum accessories, install the check valve.

 

So that check valve has nothing to do with the brake system? Your explanation has given me something to work with. What vacuum accesories other than the windshield wipers would be dependant on the check valve?
I have decided to convert the electric system to 12 volt, so I will probably install/adadpt a windshield wiper motor.

The braking system on the stock F6 uses a vaccum brake booster and thus you need the check valve:

Thanks. I do have a shop manual and also the text, and illustration catalog. My truck did not have a break booster when I bought it. I haven’t driven it; all I have done is cranking the engine and soon after this, I started the dismantling process.
I have included these picks to show you what I have; in one of the picks (second and third) you can see a set of brackets were I believe the booster attached. Also in one or two of the picks (the last two) you can see the hose in the vicinity of where the booster should be. If I do need to use the check valve, can I get something to replace this horrendous looking thing?
