As you can see I picked up a few parts today. Guy was advertising a 223 and 4sp for a hudred bucks on CL. I went to pick it up last week and saw what he's doing. He was looking for a 5.0 and an AOD to put in his '59 F350. Well I had those. So after some thought, we did some horse trading. 2 engines, 2 trannies, starters, a 1904 carb. driveshaft yoke, 2 clutches, a clutch M/C+slave and even a bumper. I think I did pretty well. He's happy too and he did pretty good. He also got a Holley 390 and a stock 5.0 4v manifold outa the deal.

 

Did you get a picture of his '59 F350? Best truck Ford ever made...

I take it you know Will? He's a straight up, honest guy. Told me about a '59 @ Pull and Save that had a radiator I need. I got it and the GM 10SI alt with brackets and belt off it. I'll naturally get a new belt, but at least I can take it to my parts guy to match up with a new one.

 

No, I don't know him.... Just bragging up my truck, as usual. Those photos of the 223 and it's components will be like 'engine ****' to certain individuals

 

The guy I got these from pull them from an F350. He's going the 5.0 AOD route.

 

It'll now be spring before I install the used engine. I decided to give it a gasket set including head gasket. When I pulled the head, there isn't even any ring ridge. So I'm gonna hot tank it, do rings, bearings timing chain and install the already reworked head. The best of the two transmissions is going in with a new clutch and everything else is being sold for scrap.

 

Finally seeing progress.

The engine is ready to install. I'm using an Autolite 1100 carb for three reasons:
1) I have it
2) I know it's good
3) It's non spark control.

Duraspark. I had to open up the stock 223 drive gear and install it because of the different tooth count. But it fits and will work fine.
That's where the Autolite 1100 comes into play as it isn't a 'crapomatic' carb.

 

Here's a better look at the dizzy install. I'd prefer it if I could put it in one tooth ahead of where it is, but the base of it then hits the first bolt that holds the lifter cover in place.
IMO it's false economy to put a used oil pump in a fresh engine. So I ordered a new one (Melling M-67A) for a '64. It takes a 5/16" drive shaft rather than a 1/4". So I didn't have to thin down the stock one, just cut about an inch off the new one.

Thanks. I think it looks pretty good. I just scored a stock fuel pump with a glass bowl on the bottom. When it gets here I'll install it. I also have a piece of 1/4" aluminum I'm thinking about using as a mount/heat sink for a GM 4 pin ignition module mounted somewhere in the fuel pump area. Then all the ignition wiring will be in the same neighborhood on the engine. Still have some head scratching to do on that.
