I have a 1966 econoline supervan that has bad gauges in it and that's the next big thing in the restoration. What are my options?

you sure the gauges are bad!?
if they are both not working you should check the constant voltage regulator on the back of the cluster, very often thats the problem.
alllllso don't forget the same gauge cluster was used in the 57-60 f series & a modified version in the c series from 57 all the way into the 70s or 80s. also on some school bus chassis.

Fuel & temp gauges don't work at all, or their needles swing wildly back/forth on their own?

Most likely available from autoparts stores, but make SURE to take the original with you to match it up. There is another that is similar, but it's not the same.

get a new temp sending unit from napa check engine ground connections (both end) run a ground wire from gas tank to frame (drill small hole in flanged seam in perimeter of tank use small sheet metal screw). That should solve both problems, if needles are moving chances are gauges are good.

 

When the ICVR begins to fail, the temp & fuel gauge needles do "the hula" .. swing wildly back/forth on their own.

When the ICVR fails, the needles no longer move. If both the fuel & temp gauges aren't working, it's most likely the ICVR has failed.
