Dana 44 code 24

Okay, so I havn't recieved anything on the axle code which I expected, It's a Dana 44 and that would be correct with the 24 on the tag? Anyways, is this a strong rear in this year or , would it handle 500 pounds of torque or so?

24 = Dana 44 Rear Axle / 3.92-1 / Limited Slip / 3,300 lbs. Rear Axle Capacity.

The axle is 53 years old. You cannot expect it to hold up to that much torque as it was never designed to...to begin with.

1957/83 F100's came standard equipment with the Ford 9" rear axle, but: 1959/67, some 1968 F100's: When optional Limited Slip was ordered, FoMoCo installed Dana 44's.

btw: I decoded your VIN and Rating Plate codes. Your truck is a 1959 .. not a 1960.

You want the axle to take 500 lb-ft of torque.

Well, a new 292 was rated for around 270 lb-ft, so in first gear on a 3 speed transmission that 292 and 3 speed could put more than 500 lb-ft to that axle. so I would say yes. Even with the 4 speed with what, about a 6.4 to 1 first gear, (about 1700 lb-ft) that axle would hold up.

But, for how long? Short bursts? Yes. For long periods? No.

It's not a new axle anymore, it's 53 years old. How long before an axleshaft crystalizes, then snaps? How long before the other internal parts give up the ghost?

Well, I understand these things. I was toying around with putting in a mild 460 that I have with 41,000 miles on it with the C-6 thats still on it. 500 pounds of torque was a safe limit. I have a 455 Olds that puts out 540.
Anyways, I found a 9" out of a driving 59 today (40 miles away!) with a 370 (tag was still on it) non posi gears, complete new brakes, no leaks for $100.00 today. The guy is going 4x4 and is putting newer everything on it. Needless to say, it is in my garage whether I use it or not. I am thinking that this would be a better rear behind the 460 should I decide to use it???
I don't do burnouts. Just 20-25 and like to hammer them once in awile from there. Saves tires.

I must admitt I love the big engine dream. I have a 429 sitting upstairs in the barn that was intended to go in my '60. However, I really didn't want to take on that big of a change with it. I would have wanted to update the front end and the steering as well if I was going to be able to go fast with a Fridge. It would have taken away much of the charm that is a "Fridge"!
I just drove over to my Dad's a couple hours ago, have to go over a couple big hills and thru a small town of about 300 folks. I just tooled along at a top speed of 45 and had a blast. Lots of folks sitting out on the porch giving a wave kind of evening. Now, I realize you can still do that with a 460 under the hood, but it isn't needed to enjoy what you already have! You should certainly do as you like with your truck but I just wanted to point out how enjoyable they can be the way they already are!!

Yes! I know where your coming from. Mine came with no motor or trans. If the original ones were in there, it would be a no brainer. I really enjoy looking at all original cars and trucks at the shows. On the other hand though, I love my big blocks. Mainly I just like to cruise with the family. The 3 of us will fit in a bench seat. If I do go with the 460, there Will be upgrades to the front end, brakes and steering. Seatbelts? Yes.
