I'm sure this has beed discussed many times through the years but I need a refresher. I have that 5 ltr in a Ford F150 2x4. Right now it has a borg warner 4 speed in it. I need better proformance off the line. and a better over all gear ratio. I plan on switching out the rear end. What types of configurations are recomended? Is it true that theres a mazda tranny that will retro fit? Its turing out to be a sleeper/racer and I'd love to continue down that road. Thanks in advance,

The Mazda M5OD-R2 is considered weak and doesn't have the granny gear that your BW T-18/19 does.

Didn't know you were interested in slushboxes. I'd use a truck AOD before a car one.

They're not really interdependent. Pick one and get the other to match your first choice. It depends on too many things for me to even make a recommendation:
How much do you want to spend? How do you want it to drive? How much abuse are you going to put it to? How much do you want to spend? How fast do you want to go? How slow do you want to go? How much do you want to spend? How much maintenance are you willing to do? How much work are you willing to do to install it? How much do you want to spend? What are you going to do with the truck? How much are you going to tow? How much do you want to spend? (Get the idea? )
Your interests are too different from mine for my opinion to be useful. It seems to me that you're trying to build a sports car out of a truck. I just don't think that's a good way to spend time, money, or sweat. If I want to go fast around curves (faster than I can now ), I'll build a Mustang.
I'm sure plenty of other people who share your interests will post some good info for you, but I've told you about all I can.

How getting a toploader 4 speed (wide ratio) for you truck along with a set of 3.50s or 3.73s. Top end won't be overly fast but the toploader will bolt right in (it did in mine but i have a 351 in my truck). You will have to take the center piece out of an automatic and cut it to fit the shifter. I have 3.0:1 in my truck for gears, for the current motor it needs more gear but it will be getting more motor in a short while.

What it is is its a 4 speed for used in the muscle car era cause it can handle the power that some people would put in their cars, like my dad had a 429 boss stang with 600hp and it was stock with the exception of a drag clutch. Go check out David Kee Toploaders .com, if that doesn't work do a search on either that name or toploader transmissions and you will find one. They cost quite a bit to buy brand new so i would get all the info and go get one out of a junkers and recondition it or you can usually find one at a swap meet.

You could try a Tremec 3550 or TKO designed for a mustang with a mid-shift kit. Check out www.hanlonmotorsports.com for info on the Tremec and mid-shift kit. I'd run a 3.50 - 4.11 gear in the rear because the Tremec has a 32% overdrive.
If cost is an issue, your best bet would be to find a used toploader trans, or if you get lucky sometimes the tremecs turn up used in the mustang crowds. Expect to spend $600 - $800 for a used tremec.
