Hey guys, is there a difference in the wheel cylinders of a 60 f100/f250? Also, who sells the best non NOS master cylinders? thanks Fridge Forum

 

I can;t tell you but one good way to cross reference is to use the Rockauto on line catalog. They will also have the new (NOS?) master cylinder, usually a choice of several manufacturers.

 

Per the shop manual,they are different, page 11-50.

F-100 Front bore of brake cylinder is 1 1/16"
Rear bore 7/8"


F-250 Front 1 1/8"
Rear 1 1/8"

 

Depending upon its' age, I would be hesitant to buy an NOS (New Old-Stock) brake part unless I could examine it first.For a potentially 50 year old part,my concern would be the rusting of the cylinder walls that could quickly cause scoring, thus leaking.Also,there is the likelihood that fifty year old rubber parts will have hardened,also with the potential to accelerate leaking in the cylinders.

This is true for either master-cylinders, or individual wheel cylinders.Go to a quality auto parts store,such as Napa.They can easily supply your parts,will stand behind them if there are problems, and returns of bad parts will be painless,as opposed to buying through the mail to save a very small amount of money.Finally, if you can, order name-brand as opposed to off-brand or no-name, the support will be better.Raybestos, EIS,are a few trusted names for brake parts,though nearly everything is coming in from that Oriental country across the waters, now.

Since NOS and new autoparts store wheel cylinders come completly assembled, please explain how their cylinder walls could possibly be rusty?

How many years have the autoparts wheel cylinders been layin' on a shelf? How many years, vehicles do these cylinders fit besides 1957/60?

And btw: 1959/60 F100 & 250 2WD's use different front wheel cylinders than 4WD's. This same info will be found in the 1961/66 forum, as the OP also asked this question there 6/27/2012.

ohh shoot. my front wheel cylinders were rust/ and nasty. I got replacement ones from Napa. parts 9090, 9091. it lists the same 1 1/16 wheel cylinder for both 2wd and 4wd?? they look the same as the ones I threw out. does number dummy have the part # for the 4wd cylinders, and possibly know the difference between 2wd and 4wd front cylinders?

Some of the reman cylinders might actually be better than new because they reline them with a stainless sleeve. NAPA rep told me that years ago but they have probably changed vendors a dozen times since then. That's one issue with NAPA, they don't actually manufacture parts, just source and label them and I have seen the trusted old Raybestos turn into slime-o Reli-on from one order to the next, with the NAPA label slathered over the Reli-on label.
