New Inspection Regs foe Diesels

This is "effective July 1, 2012, all model year 1997 or newer non-exempt diesel-powered motor vehicles that have a GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) under 8501 pounds (hereafter referred to as "LDDV") are subject to an OBD II emissions inspection, in addition to the safety inspection. (A LDDV less than two model years old, registered as "historical", or 26 or more model years old is exempt from the emissions test.)"

This is from NYVIP Message 82 dated 6/20/2012

This seems a little strange now as the DMV has limited the number of inspection stations per county because, they "don't have the resources" to check on the current stations.

Interesting - here on Long Island, there is still a plethora of inspection stations at local mechanics.

They have actually stopped sniffer-checking my 2001 V10 - so no emissions inspection whatsoever for my truck. I figured they couldn't justify the cost to the mechanics of having a separate sniffer setup that must cost big $'s.

Morning Art.... are they still doing an emmissions check on your truck by using the ODBII port??

Nope, they never did. My truck is OBD-I - not -II - no catalytic converter monitors, nor O2 monitors.

Because it's a passenger vehicle with registered weight of around 5600 lbs, the answer was to manually change the weight code to >8500lbs GVWR and the machine would call for an idle-sniffer check. If they didn't manually change the weight code, it would call for an OBD-II check and fail.

If it was commercial, and the reg had the GVWR on it, it would automatically pick that up and call for an idle sniffer check.

Now, they don't even bother with the idle-sniffer, and it's just a safety check.

And to top things off, a new inspection machine will also be required.
