I haven't changed mine yet but have been reading about the repair. There is a fuel shut off switch( inertia switch ) under the dash on the drivers side, on the firewall, to the left of the brake pedal or behind the kick panel .You are supposed to start the truck and toggle the red button up with a screwdriver, if no button ,then pull off electrical conn. The gas pressure will be removed as the engine sucks up what is left in the fuel line, the truck will stall...then crank it some more to be sure. Disconnect your battery. The pressure will be gone and it should be safe to remove the filter. Remove fuelline-to-filter clips, one on each side...then you will need a special tool or equivalent to disconnect the filter from the lines. I have seen these tools in most good auto supply places, I not sure what you need though. The filter assy is held by two bolts remove those and you're done. Reverse the process to replace filter. I bought a Haynes repair book # 36058 and it has alot of stuff for the home mech. I wouldn't try to rebuild an engine using that book, but it helps with the small stuff.

I keep on hearing people saying that the inertia fuel shutoff switch is on the drivers side. I've had the passenger side kick panel off years ago and seem to remember the switch being there. That's where it is shown in the Helm's manual.

Besides the location of the shutoff switch, the rest of the instructions given in the first reply is essentially correct. I see no reason to disconnect the battery after depressurizing the system. I have changed my filter three times on my 93. I usually unplug the fuel pump relay and crank the engine over. I think this is an easier approach.

I think the last guy has a point. I went out to look for the switch and struck out. Look in your owners book and try to find the fuel pump relay. Pull it and the pump will die. I need to find that switch too, If someone decides to have a fender bender with me, I still might have a driveable truck, unless the inertia switch pops off. If it can't be found the truck will be stuck.

I've been in two accidents with the same truck, one i slipped on a brige in snow and rear ended a guy pretty hard, the second I was hit from the passanger side at 50 mph, both times my engine was still running after the accident, good ol inertia switch.

Primary rig is Green Thunder:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Flowmaster Exhaust, Sunroof, Clear corners w/ Diamond headlights, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .

Thats it for now, saving for a stang. Check out my Gallery for a look-see.

The inertia switch is on the passenger side behind the kick panel on 92-96 models.

On my 1996, the inertia switch is on the passanger side behind the side panel (to the right of the passangers right leg). The inertia switch has a red piece on top.
When I change the fuel filter, I just remove the connector at the bottom of the switch and turn the engine over to run the gas pressure down.
Then, I use the "quick disconnect tool" wich is a little plastic round device that slips between the fuel line and the fuel filter to enable me to get the fuel line off of the filter.
I bought the "Powerbuilt" fuel line quick disconnect set part #648424
at checker auto for 11 dollars.
The 5/16" size will do the job.
There is a metal version of the quick diconnect tool available as well.
Good luck,
Gene

i WOULD THINK ABOUT FIXING YOUR INERTIA SWITCH. sOUNDS LIKE IT SHOULD HAVE SHUT OFF YOUR FUEL.MY KIDS FRIENDS WERE RAISING HELL BY POUNDING ON THE SIDE OF CAR TRUNKS WITH THEIR FISTS SO THE INERTIA SWITCH WOULD KILL THE FUEL SUPPLY. WHEN SOMEONE WAS GOING TO CHASE THESE KIDS, THEIR CAR WOULDN'T START.

I changed my fuel filter tonight. I pulled the fuel pump relay, started the truck, it died. I cranked it over for about 20 seconds to make sure the pressure was relieved...It wasn't. I got one end of the line off the filter and took about a gallon fuel bath. Then I ended up breaking the little clips on the inside of the coupler on one of the ends...I've got the outlet line held to the filter with bailing wire until I can get a new clip. Ford had some odd ideas for clips...............

Oh yeah, and If I saw a bunch of kids beating on my truck, I'd shoot first and reset my inertia switch later.
