Latly I have been hearing my left front break squeaking. At first it was only while towing and only going slow, between 5-10 mph. But today I have noticed it while driving faster and with no trailer. I have 13,500 miles and when I hit the breaks the noise goes away but comes back when I take off. Any one else have this problem?

 

Any dirt roads recently? That seems extraordinarily quick to burn through a set of pads, but everyone's driving style is different, might be time for some new pads. Might be worth pulling the tire and checking, if it's close, slap a new set of pads on it.

 

I was thinking it was a little quick too. I am very easy on my brakes. Might be a job for this weekend to check it out. Almost sounds like the caliper is not releasing all the way.

 

I haven't had the front tires off yet on mine to see if they're still using the slide pins like previous years did, but those have been an issue for a long time on SD brakes. Pop those out and lube 'em up. If they're stuck, the calipers won't release the pads causing premature brake wear (along with pulling, etc. while braking).

 

I saw that in other threads when I was looking about this issue. I will look and let you know. I do not have any pulling while braking though.

 

Happened to me on my 2008 and my new 2011. I don't tow very often, and I attributed to light brake usage (possible glazing). Happened to both trucks inside of 10k miles. Talked to the dealer about it, and they agreed to have a look. In the meantime, it just stopped. No biggie. Outside of that, maybe a stone or some sand got in somewhere. Very likely especially after winter.

Visually inspect the rotors through the wheels. If you don't see anything jumping out at you, take it on the highway. Do a couple hard braking scenarios. Try to get that glaze off the rotors, or get that stone ground down!! Just a thought.

 

Ok now I am starting to here them at faster speeds, up around 40-50 mph. Now I hear both sides squeaking. It is pretty bad a slow speeds too. Not sure which pins you are talking about on the brakes. I lubed the pins that are under the boots that hold on the calipers, but not sure if that was the correct spot. Maybe I should just let the dealer look at it but the time involved just is not good. Not able to get it there with my wife at camp for 3 weeks at a time and me working, need to get to work.

Any other thoughts. I rotated my tire a few weeks back and the rotors look good same with the pads. It's only the fronts making the noise.

 

How about a hard 75mph stop and heat them up? Wonder if the pads are glazed over. You lubed the right pins.

My right rear spring is now squeaking, it's maddening.

 

I am sure this won't fix it but it is free. Back when they were rebuilding the local county road, I drove thru considerable mud mixed with road pack. Occasionally I would get a real squeeky front brake.

The solution to that problem was to put it in reverse and, get going and then apply considedrable force to the brakes to fix it. Third time was always a charm.

 

Ok, how about this. Will warped rotors cause squeaking?
I did not know this but not having all the lugs torque the same can cause warping, at least not until I read here.

 

I've read so many things about warped rotors, some saying it's a long time issue with the Ford rotors, others saying it's a mythical beast that's causing the pulsing that's felt with the warped rotor symptoms..

The only thing I could see causing squeaking is worn out pads, pads dragging on rotors, or a rock of sorts wedged in between the shield and the rotor.

With the truck in the air, if you spin the tire, does it squeak? Although going the dealer is inconvenient, without you paying out of pocket, that may be your only option.

 

Ok got the squeak to stop. I just replaced the pads on the front and now it's like new.

I did spin the tire while is was off the ground and it would only make noise in the same spot every time. When I took the pads off there were no signs of rock or grooves in the rotors.

I bought some Hawk brake pads and you can really tell the difference, they do stop better and seems to be a little touchy at first until I got used to them. I got them for all 4 wheels but only replaced the fronts for now, the backs are not making any noise yet and I will wait for a while before doing them.

I made sure to lube the pins very well since I had the brakes apart. Everything went easy except the calipers are heavy. The rotors looked good and I did not have them turned, just installed the new pads. There is no pulsating of the pedal and no vibration of the steering wheel either, didn't have those problems anyways to start.

I got the brake pads from Amazon, $83 for the front and $75 for the rear. Ordered on Tuesday had them in my hands on Thursday afternoon. Here are the part numbers I got: Front-HB528Y.811, Rear-HB556Y.710.

The pads I took off only had about 1/3 left and only 16,000 miles on them. The new pads come with a lifetime warranty, so I won't have to buy them again.
