Here we are in the middle of May, any word on the 2013 Expeditions? I've been waiting almost 3 years to replace my daily driver 2005. Lots of rumors about the 3.5EB, any hard facts about 2013 changes and availability?

I want to know also. Weve been seriously contimplating buying a Honda Pilot to replace our 2003 EB Expedition. I think we will wait to see what Ford offers us before we jump the gun.

 

2013 Expedition is a direct carryover from 2012, no changes.

Looks like we'll have to wait until 2014/2015 now.

Personally, I've been looking at the new Durango V8. It gets 2mpg better on the highway than the Expedition and has 360hp vs the Expedition's 310hp. Towing isn't quite as good at 7200lbs vs. the Expedition's 9000lbs, but it's still enough for my trailers.

They also do a V6 version with 280hp that can still tow 6200lbs, which is pretty impressive, however it isn't available with a low-range transfer case like the V8 model (which is something I want).

Ford and GM better get their act together on their full size SUVs. They complain that no one is buying them now, but who would want to when they haven't changed their product in like 6 years? More than likely, anyone that wanted one already has one or has bought one used.

 

If the Expy changes in MY 2014/15, it looks like it will change with the F-150's. There may be many common features on the two vehicles.

I can definitely understand the frustration with those who want a new updated Expy. Aside from the six speed tranny and natural cosmetic updates, it's very similar to the 2003 models.

 

I don't think we will wait till 2014-15 for the redesigned version. I will however wait till the 2013's come out and possibly buy a new 2012 at a nice discount. Thanks for the info.

I'm buying a 2013 full sized SUV and even after owning a 2003 Expidition that I really disliked due to absolutely horrible power and gas mileage from the old 5.4 motor I was considering a new expedition IF they put the ecoboost V6 or maybe even the new MODERN 5.0 in it.
Because Ford didn't update it for 2013 they've lost my purchase.
I'm buying another Nissan Armada. I owned a 2006 and absolutely loved it! It was a night and day difference from the exp that it replaced. Felt like a giant sports car and had great towing and off road abilities with superior gas mileage. I have a Pathfinder right now and shockingly the monster 5.6 in the bigger and heavier Armada only got 1mpg less than the 4.0 V6 in the much smaller pathfinder.
Do yourself s favor and go drive an armada if you are shopping around. IMO its the best SUV on the market.

Really disappointed that ford has done such an amazing job modernizing just about every vehicle they make with state of the art tech such as VVT and direct injection and turbo...yet the expedition remains an antiquated pig!

Do yourself a favor and drive a sequoia or Armada...superior in every way!

 

Oh one more thing. The first full size SUV to come with a small diesel in it I WILL BUY!! A real shame all three American brands canceled their baby diesel programs for light truck when they pretty much had them complete and ready to manufacture. Must be politically motivated for all 3 brands to cancel...why else would they cancel them?
Nissan has been working with Cummins to develop a 3.0L diesel for the titan for 2014. If this motor makes it into the armada I'd be in heaven! Maybe I'll wait another year and not buy a 2013...
I own a 2010 VW Sportwagon TDI and it is hands down the best car I've ever owned thanks to the amazing diesel in it! Wish we had more diesels to choose from in the USA!

 

If the Titan survives, it'll likely be built by Ram, not Nissan. No real bragging rights there in my opinion.

Huge differences between the '03 Expy and the current models, mainly the six speed tranny.

Knowing that ford has a variety of new engines out right now would turn me off from an Expedition as well. I'm not really seeing any of the full size SUV's as a suitable replacement for the Expy.

 

03 Expy - 5.4 2v motor, 4 speed auto
07+ Expy - 5.4 3v motor, 6 speed auto

5.4 2v has 260 HP
5.4 3v has 300 HP (initially, now "rated" at 320 HP for later models)

late in 05 the 5.4 3v motor was put in the Expy...but they were rare IMO. So most people only have experience with the 5.4 2v variety. Decent motor, but whole different animal from the 3v motor. Especially when you couple it with a 6 speed transmission. For a 7-8,000 lbs vehicle, the 07+ Expy is pretty powerful and I could easily get 19-20 mpg on the highway. Rock steady 11.5-12 mpg city though.


YOU WILL NEVER SEE A DIESEL SUV OR LIGHT TRUCK in the USA. The EPA and CAFE has assured this. To meet regulations, manufacturers are having to increase displacement. And then crap like EGR, DEF, UREA, and all the other B.S. particulate things.
Ditto. Before getting the Flex I priced out the 2012 model Expy. Besides getting a $20k price increase from my 2008, I didn't see anything different at all. The new ones had Sync...but otherwise it was exactly the same

Kinda hard to drop that kind of money on a rig/platform with "old" tech, when the 6.2 and 5.0 and 3.5 EB have been zooming down the road for quite a few years now. Hell, the 6.2 is already in the F-150 with the same (mostly) 6 speed trans. I'd gladly have bought a 6.2 Expy

 

I knew the new 3v motor was a big improvement and didn't know about the 6spd tranny I'm sure together they are a major improvement over my terrible 03. But, my point still stands that until a major update arrives with ecoboost or 5.0 I'm not dropping $40-50k on one.

I sure hope you are wrong about a light truck never getting diesel in the US. That would be a real shame. VW and Mercedes are selling small V6 diesel SUV's in the USA currently so why cant the big 3? I'm still hopeful the cummins deal with Nissan is still on track for 2014

And the dodge Nissan venture was killed when the gov bail out happened for dodge. Nissan is now working independent on the next Titan update which is slated for 2014. Fingers crossed this includes a baby cummins!!

 

Ford has proven that with the ecoboost engine, the diesel option is a hard pill to swallow. The EB is diesel like in most ways except high maintenance costs, high initial costs and high fuel costs. For an extra 1-3 (if that) MPG's it's gonna have a very long break even point.

The 11,300 lbs that the ecoboost can tow is only limited by the chassis. The diesel will suffer the same dilemma.

 

I'm with Tim. For roughly $1,500 more (less even depending on trim), you can get the EB. A PSD will run minimum of $4k. It's almost a $8k option in the Superduty. I like my toys, but you won't catch me paying that kind of surcharge.

 

I have to disagree a bit on the EB because in real world it is not getting any better mpg than the new 5.0 making the price hike over the 5.0 questionable in value. Fuelly has over 60 EB's most averaging 17-18 which is same as 5.0.

The cummins under dev has a target AVG MPG of 28MPG in a light duty pickup. That is a HUGE improvement in mpg that EB is far from achieving. Now will it really reach that goal? My TDI VW gets 30% better mpg than the gas version. The Audi Q7 suv goes from 15mpg to 22-23mpg which is also about 30% improvment. That would take an 18mpg avg truck up to 23.4mpg avg so it seems a bit of a stretch to see 28mpg.

I 100% agree that the price hike on the diesel cannot be outrageous. I think it has to be UNDER $3k and hopefully closer to $2k to appeal to the logical side. why did ford have to cancel their baby 4.0L power stroke...would have been amazing!
